Haslemere Educational Museum
Haslemere Educational Museum is an award-winning museum situated in Southwest Surrey near the Hampshire and West Sussex borders with over 240,000 Natural History specimens, along with over 140,000 Human History artefacts from around the World. There are three large permanent galleries and two temporary exhibition rooms, with a library, archive and a dedicated education room for people of all ages. The grounds cover an area of over 15,000 square metres, with a large pond and gazebo, an observation beehive and a tree trail that follows the Museum\'s boundary through an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Salary
£35,000 – £40,000 pro- rata
Hours: Part time, 3 days a week (inc. some weekends and evenings)
Job Purpose
The Museum Manager is responsible to the Board of Trustees for the overall operational management of Haslemere Education Museum. Working with the Board of Trustees the postholder will develop the museum’s sustainability, ensuring excellent visitor experience, positive engagement with current and future audiences, fostering strong relationships internally across the staff and volunteer team and externally with the local community and partner organisations.

Responsibilities
Operations Management
* Ensuring effective leadership and management and development of the museum within the policies and procedures agreed by the Trustees Ensuring effective day to day operation of the museum Advising Trustees on policies, staffing matters, current issues and development opportunities, ensuring they receive sufficient and timely information to perform their role effectively Oversee the scheduling of events, displays and exhibitions in conjunction with the Curator and Education Officer Oversee retail operations such as the shop, ticket sales and lettings Contributing to the preparation, running and administration of Trustee and Management & Staff Committee meetings and ensuring these are effective
Staff and volunteer management
* Line-managing the operational staff team ensuring they receive the support and training needed for their safety, good performance and development and that workplans are in place and aligned with the Strategic Plan Ensuring that the team continues to provide a high quality, safe and welcoming visitor experience through clear protocols, procedures and team training Creating and sustaining a collaborative and effective teamworking culture amongst staff and volunteers
Office & premises management
* Ensuring legal compliance in areas of employment, Health & Safety, security, Safeguarding, GDPR and taking the lead in implementation and risk management Ensuring that the Emergency Plans are regularly reviewed and updated Ensuring that all building maintenance checks are carried out Ensuring effectiveness of IT systems Managing contracts and checks with suppliers, services and utilities, ensuring stability and value for money Ensuring a call-out rota is in place and being a keyholder
Organisational development
* Driving delivery of the Strategic Plan and informing its future development Working with the Curator and Education Officer to retain Accreditation standards Be the public face of the museum to enable the museums future development
Financial management
* Work with the Finance Trustee and the Honorary Treasurer to set the Museum’s operating budget, and working with the Finance Officer to ensure it is managed appropriately and that effective financial procedures and performance indicators are in place Coordinate grant applications and drive forward membership
Audience development
* Reviewing, monitoring and interpreting the museum’s visitor data, providing regular reports and recommendations to Trustees Developing marketing, PR and digital presence with the office team Developing external partnerships and stakeholder relationships that will enable the museum to enhance its activities and offer Supporting the work of Trustees in cultivating potential donors and sponsors Professional development Taking a leading role in continuing professional development, identifying relevant training and professional development opportunities
Person Specification
We are looking for someone with extensive recent experience of leadership management in the heritage/culture sector, including line-management of staff and financial management, with highly developed communication, interpersonal and organisation skills, and a flexible and creative approach to problem-solving.
Qualifications
Degree or equivalent, plus experience of working in a similar role OR specialised skills acquired through significant on the job experience
Essential experience/competencies
Significant demonstrable recent experience leading a multi-disciplinary team in a museum, heritage site, or culture setting Managing staff and volunteers, including the necessary skills and ability to develop and motivate a strong team. Experience of recruitment, retention, development and assessment of staff and volunteer teams Knowledge in the development of exhibitions, events and programmes which engage a range of audiences Managing budgets and resources Business, financial and organisational planning Experience of effective marketing and use of social media to promote events, exhibitions and membership Developing and managing projects, including fundraising and grant applications Monitoring and interpreting data to inform audience development
