Electronic Warfare Sector Design Authority
Crawley – Hybrid

Thales Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) UK is a principal supplier of UAS, EW and Radar equipment to the UK armed forces, as well as an exporter of these capabilities worldwide.

We are recruiting an Electronic Warfare Sector Design Authority with experience of working within the field of Electronic Warfare, or related fields such as RESM, CESM, ECM or similar. You will have prior knowledge of the key principles of the domain and can quickly grasp the science and technology that sits behind a modern digital EW suite. You may have a military background, having operated EW equipment in the field, or have worked in the design, development or testing of similar products.

The Design Authority (DA) is a role that serves as a referent for the organization (GBU, BL) that technical matters are properly managed within the project(s) the DA supervises. The DA approves the DVa for a Bid, Product or Project. The DA works closely and helps the PDA and architects.

The DA validates that the technical solution is feasible, competitive and meets customer expectations, in terms of cost, innovation, performance, schedule, etc.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Acts as the primary technical leader of the Sector.
2. Monitor, review, advise and assist with technical issues across the Sector.
3. Validates the DVa
4. Approves the main bid/project engineering reviews and deliverables.
5. Organizes when appropriate technical meetings and peer reviews together with the PDA, Architect (ARC) and the SEM and other stakeholders (industry, services, specialists…), in order to perform the solution technical assessment and validation
6. Supports the TD in the preparation of the Strategic Technology Plans (SBP, TISP, SFR&D, Roadmaps…) relevant to the EW Sector
7. Act as the Design and Safety Authority across the programmes, products and opportunities in ISR UK EW Sector
8. Technical Governance of projects and opportunities, including production, approval and maintenance of the DVa’s
9. Reviews and technical audits of the programmes to minimise technical risk and ensure adherence to process
10. Capture and execution of Customer Funded Research and Development (CFR&D) through Future ISR
11. Advises on the management, governance and execution of Self-Funded Research and Development (SFR&D)
12. Supports the management of the specialist and technical expert selection process
13. Management and maintenance of technical and system engineering skills relevant to the technical directorate activities
14. Participation to DMS and Thales UK transverse activities to ensure synergy and coherence between BLs.

Experience and skills expected of the successful candidate:

Essential

15. Radar/Electronic Warfare systems engineering in the maritime/land/air environment.
16. Radar/RESM/RECM performance modelling, design, development, integration and trials.
17. Preparation of bids for domestic and export customers.
18. Deep understanding of digital Radar / EW receiver technology and techniques.
19. Experience across the engineering life cycle

Skills

20. Ability to generate innovative solutions including system acceptance and system certification within a competitive environment
21. Ability to understand and design complex systems
22. Ability to communicate, guide and lead all disciplines of engineering teams
23. Ability to act as technical point of contact for the customer.

Highly Desirable

24. Understanding of wide variety of engineering disciplines (systems, software, hardware, EMC, RF…).
25. Experience of certification of Radar/EW systems to customer specifications and managing the customer through this process

Security Clearance Statement

This role will require SC Clearance. It would be advantageous if currently held, however, if not currently held, it is a requirement that the successful applicant will undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance. Please visit the UKSV website for further guidance.

To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years. In some circumstances, a minimum of 3 years’ residence in the UK over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.
