 
        
        The Castro Lab at Brunel University London is recruiting a Research Assistant (MSc/BSc) or Research Fellow (PhD) funded by the Academy of Medical Sciences Springboard Award. The role offers an excellent opportunity for a motivated postgraduate or postdoctoral scientist to gain training in cutting‑edge molecular biology, super‑resolution imaging, and genomics.
Key Responsibilities
 * Investigate nuclear pore complex (NPC) biology with a focus on Nup153 and its roles during viral infection, particularly HIV‑1 interactions.
 * Perform biochemical, molecular, and imaging experiments, including western blotting and immunofluorescence.
 * Use high‑resolution microscopy (Nikon Spinning Disk, Deep‑SIM) and genomics platforms to generate data and interpret results.
 * Contribute to scientific publications, presentations, and grant applications.
 * Collaborate with the research team and participate in weekly seminars and training activities.
Qualifications and Experience
 * Either a PhD in Molecular Biology, Genomics, or a related discipline, or an MSc/BSc with relevant experience.
 * Strong proficiency in tissue culture, core molecular biology techniques, western blotting, and immunofluorescence.
 * Experience or interest in virology (HIV) is highly desirable.
 * Demonstrated ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams.
 * Part‑time appointments (0.7–0.8 FTE) may be considered for candidates with caring responsibilities.
Research Environment
The lab is newly established at the Uxbridge campus and provides access to state‑of‑the‑art microscopy equipment, molecular biology facilities, genomics services, and bioinformatics support. The department hosts weekly seminars featuring world‑renowned invited speakers, fostering a dynamic collaborative culture.
Conditions, Salary and Benefits
 * Location: Brunel University London, Uxbridge Campus
 * Salary: Grade R1 – £36,640 to £47,921 (inclusive of London weighting) with potential progression to £52,067 per annum for exceptional contribution.
 * Hours: Full‑time (part‑time applications welcome).
 * Contract type: Fixed‑term (1 January 2026 – 31 August 2027).
