Senior Practitioner

The senior practitioner is responsible to the deputy manager and manager.

Job Description

It is the responsibility of the senior Practitioner to assist in the efficient and effective delivery of a quality childcare service for children between the ages of 0 – 5 years and support and guide the practitioners and support workers to carry out their duties. This will involve the Lead Practitioner working in accordance with the settings policies and procedures and being pro-active in developing their knowledge and skills in regards to the national guidance and curriculum appropriate to the 0 – 5 age group.

Knowledge

It is requirement of the setting that a Senior Practitioner:

* has previous experience of working with children.
* has an SVQ 3 or equivalent and it would be desirable if the senior is interested in working towards or already has a PDA or SVQ 4 qualification in childcare.
* has a sound knowledge and understanding of how to interact with service users such as children, parents, practitioner and support workers.

Responsibilities

It will be the responsibility of the Senior Practitioner:

* To welcome all parents/carers and their children into the setting, gathering information about each child to ensure they are able to provide the best quality of care individual to each child's needs and give an informative handover when the children are collected to allow the parent/carers to fully understand how the child has been throughout the day and what activities have been participating in.
* To communicate confidently and clearly with parents about their child and information that will be essential to supporting their engagement within their child's learning and development and with the setting.
* To ensure the effective delivery of the curriculum and have knowledge to share the curriculum with colleagues and families.
* To support the children with their care routines such as nappy changing, tooth brushing and sleep routines (if applicable.)

· To co-operate guide and communicate with other team members and participate effectively in the work of the team. This will include planning within the room, monitoring the children and completing observations of the children to contribute to each child's learning story and encourage other team members to contribute points for discussion and ideas to room meetings.

· To instruct and assist the Practitioners and Apprentices to help the children with transition times within the routine such as hand washing, getting ready to go out to the garden and welcome/group times.

· To instruct and assist the Practitioners and Apprentices in the setting up and maintenance of areas indoors and out. Ensuring that the Practitioners and Apprentices is carrying out their duties by instructing them in the setting up of group names, collecting materials/resources and maintaining the basic provision i.e. filling paint pots, sharpening pencils, filling paper trays etc.

· To instruct and assist in the setting up of snack and all that it involves such as preparing the snack names and menu, preparing the snack tray and supporting/assisting children during snack time.

· To instruct and assist in the maintenance of a clean and healthy environment for children and staff. This includes sterilising of resources, the monitoring and removal of damaged or unsafe resources and the upkeep of the general cleanliness of the room and communal areas. (Please refer to cleaning rotas for guidance)

· To take responsibility for instructing and assisting other members of the team to provide daily and weekly activities according to the planning and topics. Manage small group activities to provide the children with good quality learning opportunities.

· To give praise, encouragement, reassurance and assistance to help develop the support staff and children's self-esteem and confidence.

· To ensure all paperwork is completed for example child protection forms, accident/incident forms and medication forms and to ensure guidance is given to support workers on who to report any instances observed to. It is the responsibility of all staff to ensure records of this nature are up to date and accurate for each child.

· To ensure all paperwork is up to date i.e. planning, learning stories, action plans, care plans and staged assessment meeting documents.

In addition to the knowledge and responsibilities required to be a Senior Practitioner at Argyle Bridge Children's Nursery we expect our employees to be reliable, honest and committed. To be caring and patient with the children in their care and demonstrate initiative and good time keeping skills. It is also a requirement that staff members attend additional training courses which will mainly be out with working hours to ensure they are up to date with good practice and new initiatives and are continually building on their professional development and skills. This will be recorded by the individual on their SSSC app or folder for the staff member, management team and/or the Care Inspectorate to refer to.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: £15.20 per hour

Expected hours: 28.5 – 38 per week
