Patient Safety Partner


Job overview

The Patient Safety Partner (PSP) is a key member of The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s commitment to delivering safe, high-quality, patient centred care. The postholder works collaboratively with staff, patients, families and carers to support the development, implementation and monitoring of patient safety initiatives. They bring the lived experience of patients and carers into decision making processes, ensuring that safety systems, improvement work and governance arrangements are grounded in the real needs and experiences of those using our services.

The PSP contributes to patient safety oversight groups, quality improvement projects, incident learning processes and strategic planning, championing openness, transparency and continuous improvement across the Trust.

The expectation of this role is two days (approx 15 hours) per month paid at a rate of £150 per day.


Main duties of the job

* Contribute to the development and review of Trust wide patient safety policies, frameworks and improvement plans.
* Participate in relevant meetings such as the Clinical Governance meetings, Clinical Quality Group meetings, Patient Experience Group Meetings and Improvement Programme Boards.
* Provide constructive challenge and assurance to ensure safety risks, themes and actions are appropriately prioritised and addressed.
* Support the integration and development of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF) across the Trust.
* Promote a culture of openness, learning and psychological safety in all areas of practice.
* Participate in patient safety incident reviews, learning responses and thematic analyses by providing a patient/carer perspective.

Person specification


Qualifications

* Good general standard of education (e.g., GCSEs or equivalent
* Further education or training in patient experience, safety, quality improvement or health related field


Experience

* Demonstrable lived experience as a patient, carer or service user with understanding of NHS services
* Experience engaging with people from a range of backgrounds.
* Experience representing patient voice in formal NHS or voluntary sector roles.
* Experience of contributing to discussions about patient care, service improvement or safety.


Knowledge

* Basic understanding of patient safety principles, patient experience and quality of care.
* Ability to use email, Microsoft Teams, Word and basic online platforms.
* Willingness to participate in induction, training and supervision
* Knowledge of PSIRF, duty of candour, incident learning or governance processes
* Ability to review digital documents, data dashboards or safety reports.


Skills

* Ability to manage personal schedule, review papers in advance and meet agreed commitments.
* Strong verbal communication skills; ability to express views clearly and respectfully
* Ability to remain calm and constructive during sensitive or challenging discussions.
* Experience contributing to structured working groups or panels.
* Experience interpreting reports or considering risk/safety themes
* Experience participating in complex or emotionally sensitive meetings.

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
