Associate/Technical Director – Planning
Our Scottish Environment and Planning Team is looking for an Associate / Technical Director in Planning to support a diverse portfolio of major infrastructure upgrades and renewable energy developments in Scotland. The role is based in our Stirling office and involves delivering project work, leading a small team, making planning consents across utilities and infrastructure sectors, and collaborating with clients, local authorities and team members across the UK.
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage a small team to deliver strategic advice, guidance and services to clients on planning and land use, and review objectives in own area of responsibility.
* Develop and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders including client teams, technical specialists, Local Planning Authorities, statutory consultees, and specialist colleagues; attend relevant meetings and site visits.
* Report directly to the client, own team performance for deadlines and objectives, deliver projects against client programmes, and drive progress and continuous improvement.
* Support the wider Environment and Planning team on other projects, provide guidance on complex cases, seek efficiency gains, and identify new work options.
* Maintain own knowledge and skills through CPD, schedule progress reviews, and keep an up‑to‑date record of activities.
* Monitor, support and coordinate the work and development of junior staff; provide constructive line‑management, hold progress review and feedback meetings, delegate tasks, and demonstrate genuine interest in their welfare and development.
* Actively support company groups, initiatives, events and socials, promote the company values and maintain a positive workplace attitude.
* Carry out work in compliance with all legal, regulatory, contractual and organisational requirements and policies.
Qualifications
* Relevant planning degree and chartered membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (MRTPI).
* Working knowledge of the UK planning system, preferably the Scottish framework.
* Strong analytical, presentation, written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare fee proposals and advise on multidisciplinary projects.
* Commercial awareness, understanding client needs and negotiating with stakeholders.
* Excellent communication, willingness to learn and develop.
* Knowledge of GIS systems and environmental technical disciplines.
* Self‑motivated, organised, with a full UK driving licence.
* Team player with a can‑do attitude.
