Robert Bird Group (RBG) is expanding its Advanced Technical Services (ATS) team and seeks a Design Engineer with strong analytical skills to work on high‑profile, technically demanding projects.
Types of Projects You’ll Be Exposed To
* Large‑span sports and stadium structures
* Seismic and complex structural systems for mega‑developments
* Major transport infrastructure, including rail and metro
* High‑rise commercial and mixed‑use buildings
* Vibration, dynamic, and performance‑based engineering studies
* Fire, impact and blast
* Emerging sectors, including nuclear and advanced energy projects
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver detailed structural design, calculations, and technical documentation.
* Build, analyse, and check numerical models, including nonlinear, dynamic, seismic, thermal, and progressive collapse modelling.
* Support projects from concept design through detailed design and construction phases.
* Apply RBG construction engineering methods, standards, and technical procedures.
* Design and oversee drafting of temporary works such as falsework, support towers, access platforms, and lifting beams.
* Develop construction sequencing and crane erection schemes for complex structures.
* Conduct site inspections, liaise with site teams, and integrate findings into engineering outputs.
* Coordinate effectively with clients, consultants, contractors, and multidisciplinary internal teams.
* Support project resource planning, programming, scheduling, and progress monitoring.
* Implement Quality Assurance (QA) procedures across all deliverables.
* Represent and promote RBG professionally to clients and industry partners.
* Support project financial awareness, including fee variations, invoicing, and cost control.
* Maintain strong client service, responsiveness, and satisfaction.
* Assist in training, mentoring, and guiding graduates and junior draftspersons.
* Implement and monitor Health & Safety requirements on all assigned projects.
* Participate in Workplace Health & Safety committee activities when required.
Qualifications & Skills
* Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or a related discipline (Master’s preferred).
* Solid grasp of structural engineering principles and advanced analytical methods.
* Experience with FE/modelling tools (e.g., ABAQUS, ANSYS, LS‑DYNA, Strand7, MIDAS) an advantage.
* Working knowledge of structural design codes and performance‑based engineering.
* Ability to develop, interrogate, and clearly communicate complex engineering models and outputs.
* Strong written and verbal communication; effective collaborator in multidisciplinary teams.
* Programming/automation skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB, Dynamo) desirable.
