The Importance of Lunchtime Supervision For children, lunchtime is more than just a break. It’s a time when friendships flourish, social skills develop, and children learn independence. However, for some, it can also be stressful or overwhelming. That’s where you come in. As a Midday Meal Supervisor, you will create a safe, structured, and positive environment. You will be the calm and approachable adult children rely on when they need help, reassurance, or guidance. By helping maintain order and encouraging positive behaviour, you make a difference in every child’s day. What the Role Involves Your duties will be varied, hands-on, and engaging. Key responsibilities include: Supervising pupils in dining areas, playgrounds, and classrooms Supporting children during mealtimes, particularly younger pupils Encouraging good manners, independence, and respectful behaviour Being aware of allergies, dietary needs, and medical conditions Maintaining a calm and safe dining environment Supervising outdoor and indoor play activities Promoting positive, inclusive play and fair participation Addressing minor behaviour issues promptly and calmly Helping pupils resolve minor disputes in a fair manner Providing reassurance and support to children who may be upset or anxious Administering basic first aid where necessary (training provided) Reporting accidents, incidents, or safeguarding concerns to school staff Collaborating with teachers, teaching assistants, and senior lunchtime staff You will be a familiar, trusted adult that children can rely on every day.
