Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with an interest in Oculo‑plastics
This 12‑month locum role is a fantastic opportunity for Ophthalmology doctors with a special interest in oculo‑plastics. The locum will provide high‑quality care for patients through outpatient clinics, surgical interventions, and treatments, in addition to reviewing casualty patients, general ophthalmology patient reviews, teaching, research, service development, and clinical governance. Responsibilities
Responsible for the continuing care and treatment of patients and for the personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in the job plan. Responsible for the supervision, training, and management of junior medical staff and allied health professionals, carrying out teaching, examination, and accreditation duties, and contributing to postgraduate and CPD activity locally and nationally. Participate in clinical audit and the annual appraisal process. Maintain and comply with continuing professional development requirements, supported by the Trust. Maintain awareness of and act according to professional guidelines such as “Duties of a Doctor”, “Good Medical Practice”, and the GMC Performance Procedures. Undertake additional duties for limited periods within the Trust, if required. Deliver high‑quality consultant‑led care in general ophthalmology. Provide assessment and management of oculo‑plastic conditions, including eyelid, lacrimal, and peri‑orbital disease. Undertake oculo‑plastic procedures in line with skills and service requirements. Participate in outpatient clinics and theatre/procedure sessions. Contribute to the 1:9 ophthalmology on‑call rota. Work closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure excellent patient outcomes. Participate in clinical governance, audit, and service development. Support teaching and supervision of trainees and other staff, as appropriate. Person Specification
Qualifications
Full registration with the General Medical Council. CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) in Ophthalmology. Consultant‑level experience in general ophthalmology. Demonstrated special interest and experience in oculo‑plastic ophthalmology. Skills and abilities
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Ability to handle difficult patient interviews with tact and sensitivity. Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate for effective medical communication. Ability to lead where appropriate. Ability and commitment to team working. Enthusiasm for lifelong learning and continued professional development. Experience
ST level or equivalent, with experience of teaching and a commitment to teaching. Knowledge
Higher Medical Degree or Diploma competency in oculo‑plastic surgery. This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and therefore requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
