Amey is a leading provider of full life-cycle engineering, operations, and decarbonisation solutions for transport infrastructure and complex facilities. We focus on delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions that enhance life and protect our shared future.

Our people are driven by strong values such as safety, insight, and collaboration.

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Bridge Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Manchester, Newcastle, or Sheffield, with shared office space, attending when necessary, and working remotely on other days. We welcome applications from Lead Engineers across these regions.

Our Structures Team is involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering projects across Scotland, with project values exceeding £1bn.

Amey manages long-term contracts for the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Networks, with contracts awarded in 2020 and 2022, respectively, extendable up to 12 years. We also work on various major roads, bridges, and transportation projects across the UK.

These contracts offer excellent opportunities for professional growth and involvement in challenging engineering projects related to Scotland’s arterial road network.

The role

As a Lead Bridge Engineer, you will support the Design team and work closely with Transport Scotland. You will lead projects, mentor junior designers, and support your team leader.

Responsibilities include:

* Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions according to standards and client requirements
* Preparing and reviewing designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation
* Overseeing junior staff and ensuring quality and compliance
* Managing project budgets and costs
* Liaising with clients and suppliers
* Contributing to bids and work-winning activities
* Promoting health and safety practices within the team

What you will bring to us:

* Experience in a senior engineering role or equivalent
* Ability to produce compliant engineering solutions independently and supervise others
* Knowledge of health, safety, and welfare management, including CDM regulations
* Experience acting as a main engineering contact, e.g., CRE for Network Rail schemes
* Design and specification expertise, with high-standard design checking skills
* Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools
* Understanding of risk assessment and hazard management
* Capability to act as Principal Designer where appropriate
* People management skills for supervising a medium-sized team
* Chartered or Incorporated status preferred, depending on contract requirements

What we can offer you:

At Amey, we value our people and offer flexibility, career development, benefits, and support. We are recognized among the top 1% of employers by Investors in People.

We have a clear career progression framework, mentoring, professional qualification support, and recognition bonuses for qualifications achieved.

Work-life Balance

We promote flexible working options, including hybrid, part-time, and flexible hours, with offices across the UK.

Our benefits include health plans, GP access, wellbeing programs, dental vouchers, and more.

Our inclusive culture is supported by affinity networks such as Women @ Amey, NeuroDiversity, Armed Forces, Multicultural Network, Pride, Diversability, and Parents & Carers.

Employees receive 2 Community Involvement Days annually for volunteering, plus additional fundraising opportunities.

Additional benefits include:

* Pension: Generous pension scheme with contributions from Amey
* Choices: Flexible benefits like additional leave, cycle schemes, charity giving, and gym discounts
* Save with Amey: Discount portal for shopping and entertainment
