The Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Bridge Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Manchester, Newcastle, or Sheffield, with shared office space, attending when necessary, and working remotely on other days. We welcome applications from Lead Engineers across these regions.
Our Structures Team is involved in designing some of the largest civil engineering projects across Scotland, with project values exceeding £1bn.
Amey manages long-term contracts for the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Networks, with contracts awarded in 2020 and 2022, respectively, extendable up to 12 years. We also work on various major roads, bridges, and transportation projects across the UK.
These contracts offer excellent opportunities for professional growth and involvement in challenging engineering projects related to Scotland’s arterial road network.
The role
As a Lead Bridge Engineer, you will support the Design team and work closely with Transport Scotland. You will lead projects, mentor junior designers, and support your team leader.
Responsibilities include:
* Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions according to standards and client requirements
* Preparing and reviewing designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation
* Overseeing junior staff and ensuring quality and compliance
* Managing project budgets and costs
* Liaising with clients and suppliers
* Contributing to bids and work-winning activities
* Promoting health and safety practices within the team
What you will bring to us:
* Experience in a senior engineering role or equivalent
* Ability to produce compliant engineering solutions independently and supervise others
* Knowledge of health, safety, and welfare management, including CDM regulations
* Experience acting as a main engineering contact, e.g., CRE for Network Rail schemes
* Design and specification expertise, with high-standard design checking skills
* Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools
* Understanding of risk assessment and hazard management
* Capability to act as Principal Designer where appropriate
* People management skills for supervising a medium-sized team
* Chartered or Incorporated status preferred, depending on contract requirements
