Job Overview
The Mental Health Support Teams (MHST) were established in Nottingham City in February 2020. The team provides an early‑intervention and preventative service for over 892 children and young people and their families. Services include support for anxiety, low mood and behavioural difficulties, as well as workshops for children in educational settings on themes such as transition, resilience, wellbeing hacks, worry, distractions and puberty emotions.
MHST currently supports children and young people in more than 70 educational settings, with plans to expand to around 100 sites over the next 18 months. The expansion is funded through £1.01 m from NHS England and Health Education England as part of a national mental‑health initiative.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver low‑level guided self‑help and other therapeutic interventions to young people and families, both face‑to‑face and remotely.
* Work with schools across Nottingham City to support whole‑school approaches to mental health and emotional wellbeing.
* Provide training and workshops for schools and parents.
* Consult with schools on mental health and wellbeing strategies.
* Assess the communication needs of schools and deliver psycho‑education to parents, teaching staff and young people.
* Provide individual and group interventions for children experiencing difficulties managing emotions.
Qualifications and Experience
* Undergraduate degree in Psychology or a related discipline.
* Successful completion of the HEE‑commissioned 1‑year Education Mental Health Practitioner postgraduate diploma and/or Certificate in Children’s Wellbeing Practice (CWP).
* Experience working with children and young people in educational and health settings, particularly with mild to moderate mental health problems.
* Experience delivering therapeutic interventions such as Guided Self‑Help, CBT and parent work.
* Ability to assess and refer children with more severe problems to specialist services.
* Experience liaising with pupils, families, and wider networks (e.g. education, social care, health).
* Adaptation of resources for online or phone delivery (e.g. Google Classroom).
* Cultural sensitivity and ability to provide support to diverse populations.
