The Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Bridge Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Manchester, Newcastle, or Sheffield, with shared office space and remote working options. We welcome applications from experienced Lead Engineers across this region.
Our Structures Team is involved in designing major civil engineering projects across Scotland, with project values exceeding £1bn.
Amey manages the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, awarded in 2020 and 2022 respectively, with durations of 8 years, extendable up to 12. We also undertake various other road, bridge, and transportation projects across the UK.
These long-term contracts offer excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional development at all career stages.
The role
As a Lead Bridge Engineer, you will support the Design team and work closely with Transport Scotland. You will lead projects, mentor junior staff, and provide technical expertise.
Responsibilities include:
* Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions in compliance with standards and client requirements
* Preparing and checking designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation to meet quality, cost, and schedule targets
* Overseeing junior team members and ensuring quality of their work
* Managing project budgets and controlling costs
* Liaising with clients and suppliers, attending meetings, and responding to queries
* Contributing to bids and work-winning activities
* Promoting health and safety best practices within the team
What you will bring to us:
* Experience and expertise in civil engineering, likely in a senior role
* Ability to produce and check high-quality designs independently and supervise others
* Knowledge of health, safety, and welfare management, including CDM regulations
* Experience acting as a main engineering contact, e.g., CRE for Network Rail schemes
* Understanding of design and specification processes, with ability to advise and check designs
* Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools
* Strong understanding of risk management and CDM principles
* Capability to act as Principal Designer on projects
* People management skills, including managing a medium-sized team
* Incorporated or Chartered status is desirable and may be essential for certain contracts
