Consultant Histopathologist

We are seeking proactive, motivated, forward‑thinking and dynamic consultants to join the clinical team at East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust. This substantive appointment is based at Lister Hospital in Stevenage with no on‑call commitment.
Main duties of the job
* To participate in surgical cut‑up, surgical reporting, cytology reporting, frozen section reporting, ensuring high‑quality histopathology and cytopathology service.
* To advise and be available for consultation on clinical matters generally and on an individual patient basis with hospital clinicians, GPs and Trust staff.
* To participate in the training of clinical fellows.
* To responsible for interpretation of results and advise on appropriate further investigations where necessary.
* To participate in service management and work with laboratory staff and pathology management team to set clinical priorities and resolve operational problems.
* To lead laboratory staff on clinical matters and instruct them in day‑to‑day handling of cases.
* To participate in audit, accreditation and quality assurance schemes.
* To undertake continuing professional development (CPD) as required by the Royal College of Pathologists.
* To comply with the Trust mandatory training programme.
* To work with colleagues on setting the strategic clinical direction and development of the pathology service and participate in administrative duties as required.
* To advise and discuss with the pathology management team changes in methodologies or introduction of new equipment, consumables or new tests.
Qualifications / Training
* Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC) – or eligible for registration within six months of interview.
* UK‑trained applicants must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by interview date.
* Non‑UK‑trained applicants must provide evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
* FRCPATH or qualification of an equivalent level.
* College Fellowship.
Previous Experience
* Demonstrable experience in a locum consultant role.
* Experience supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues.
* Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion.
* Evidence of leading on patient safety issues and effecting change in practice.
* Published papers and original work in peer‑reviewed journals.
* Understanding of audit, evidence‑based practice and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
* Experience and participation in research.
Skills
* Evidence engagement with clinical governance and identification of errors and learning from errors.
* Evidence engagement with appraisal and revalidation.
* Situational awareness and good decision‑making.
* Effective teaching of clinical skills.
* Critical appraisal of published evidence.
Knowledge
* Understanding of basic principles of audit, evidence‑based practice and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
* Comprehensive knowledge of GMC standards of Good Medical Practice.
