Brothers & sisters volunteering opportunity

Offer description

Rossie is a multidisciplinary organisation which aims to help vulnerable children and young people prepare for independent living. We provide accommodation, bespoke care and individualised education, ensuring all areas of our young people’s health are being met. We have been caring for boys, aged 10-18, since 1857 and boys and girls, aged 10-18 since 1984. We are committed to helping our young people in care build strategies to cope with their past, while they prepare for their future. We deliver all our services in a safe and nurturing environment where our young people can grow, develop and thrive, at their own pace.

The Brothers and Sisters Project: An exciting new volunteering opportunity!

The Brothers and Sisters Project, set in Coorie House in the grounds of Rossie Young People’s Trust, is a new initiative which will support siblings who have been separated by the care system to spend meaningful time together in a fun, safe and dignified way. The project will rely on compassionate and enthusiastic volunteers who will be matched to a sibling group and go on to support their relationship through play, helping them to enjoy fun and memorable experiences together. Could this be you?

As a Brothers and Sisters Volunteer, your role will include:

* Getting to know the children and young people that you are matched with
* Engaging children in activities and play, led by their interests
* Promoting and supporting the sibling relationship, with a focus on activities that encourage time together
* Role modelling positive behaviours to support positive play
* Demonstrating patience and understanding where children and young people might find elements of the session challenging
* Developing, planning and implementing activities that are relevant, safe and appropriate for the children and young people you are supporting
* Bringing your skills and interests to the sessions to allow children to experience new activities and opportunities
* Meeting with your Coordinator after sessions to reflect and share anything that feels important or significant to you
* Recording some basic feedback after each session

What we will offer you:

* A dedicated Coordinator who will support you with all elements of your volunteering with us
* A purpose-built house and grounds, full of incredible resources to inspire you
* Initial and ongoing training which will help you to learn about and develop your understanding of children, young people and the importance of family connections, as well as the care system
* Regular, scheduled opportunities for checking in and reflection
* Team Building Days, designed to help you to get to know your fellow volunteers and have fun
* Our commitment to working with you to ensure the environment is accessible and suitable for you, considering any additional support needs you may have
* We will get to know you, value you and care about you as an individual

Requirements:

No previous experience is necessary to volunteer in this role. Previous experience working with children and young people will be helpful, as will an understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection, but these are not essential. This role will require you to become a member of the PVG Scheme and all volunteers must be 18+.

We are keen that our volunteers represent the breadth of society and would be especially delighted to have care experienced individuals as part of our team.

Travel:

Coorie House is situated in the grounds of Rossie Young People’s Trust, Montrose, DD10 9TW. All travel expenses will be reimbursed as per our Expenses Policy. If travelling to the project may act as an obstacle to your volunteering, please let us know and we can explore possible solutions.

Availability and Commitment

We anticipate that volunteers will need to be able to commit to a minimum of 5 hours a month. The project will see you matched with at least 1 sibling group whose visits will be planned around your availability. It will be incredibly important for these children that, wherever possible, plans are upheld and so it is essential that you feel able and willing to commit to scheduled sessions (emergencies/sickness aside).

All of that to say...

If you want to make a difference to the lives of children and young people, understand the importance of nurturing family relationships and want to have fun doing it; we want to hear from you! Please let us know you’re interested by completing the online application form or emailing us at cara.jamieson@rossie.org.uk. Once we receive your expression of interest, we’ll be in touch to invite you to our Volunteer Open Day in January 2026.
