Jmc Legal Recruitment
Construction lawyer
Posted: 29 March
Offer description

This is an opportunity to help shape Scotland’s built environment with a firm at the heart of many of its most significant projects.

A top-tier commercial law firm with deep roots in Scotland and a growing UK footprint is seeking a Construction Projects Solicitor to join its team. The firm’s Construction practice is involved in many of the country’s most high-profile infrastructure, energy, real estate and regeneration schemes.

The role offers the chance to move beyond providing technical expertise and to become a genuine strategic adviser to clients delivering complex, real‑world projects.

The opportunity

The successful candidate will join a leading Construction & Projects practice acting for:

* Developers, funds and institutional investors
* Major contractors and specialist sub-contractors
* Government bodies and local authorities
* Utilities, energy and infrastructure businesses
* Universities, health boards and other public sector organisations

The team’s work spans:

* Major commercial and residential developments
* Infrastructure and transport projects
* Energy (including onshore and offshore renewables)
* Education, health, and urban regeneration schemes
* Refurbishments and complex fit‑out projects

The solicitor will advise on the full lifecycle of a project – from procurement strategy and risk allocation, through drafting and negotiation, to project delivery and dispute avoidance.

Typical work includes:

* Drafting and negotiating standard form and bespoke building contracts (e.g. SBCC, NEC, FIDIC, JCT and ancillary documentation)
* Professional appointments, collateral warranties, guarantees and bonds
* Development agreements and forward funding structures with construction interfaces
* Operation and maintenance, facilities management and related commercial contracts
* Working alongside colleagues in real estate, energy, finance and planning on multi‑disciplinary transactions

Why this role?

Real influence on major projects

The successful candidate will work on transactions that change city skylines, upgrade critical infrastructure and support Scotland’s energy transition, seeing the direct impact of their advice in the built environment.

High-calibre clients, approachable team

They will advise sophisticated UK and international clients within a tight-knit, supportive team that values collaboration over hierarchy, working directly with market‑leading partners committed to their development.

Genuine career progression

There is a clear pathway for advancement, with transparent criteria and active mentoring. The construction team is growing, and there is scope for the new joiner to grow with it – whether as a technical specialist, client relationship lead or future partner.

Breadth and variety

No two projects are the same. One day may involve helping a public body procure a major new facility; the next, supporting a fund with the construction aspects of a landmark city-centre development.

Balanced working

The firm offers a modern, hybrid approach to work between home and its centrally located offices in Edinburgh or Glasgow, alongside colleagues in commercial, real estate, energy and infrastructure teams.

Candidate profile

The firm is interested in people rather than rigid boxes, but the ideal candidate is likely to have:

* 4+ years’ PQE (or equivalent experience) in construction law or a closely related area
* Experience in non-contentious construction (drafting and negotiating building contracts, appointments and related documents)
* A solid understanding of risk allocation in construction and infrastructure projects
* Confidence in liaising directly with clients, consultants and counterparties
* Strong drafting skills, commercial awareness and attention to detail
* A genuine interest in how projects are put together and delivered in practice
* Candidates from private practice or in-house roles are welcome, including those currently based elsewhere in the UK who are interested in relocating or working with a Scotland-focused practice.

Culture and rewards

The successful candidate will join a firm that combines the scale and quality of a leading commercial practice with a down‑to‑earth, inclusive culture, and can expect:

* An attractive salary and comprehensive benefits package
* Structured training and CPD, with access to internal and external learning programmes
* Early responsibility, with partner support and supervision
* Opportunities to be involved in business development, client seminars and thought leadership on construction and infrastructure issues
* An environment that encourages authenticity and supports a sustainable, long‑term career
