Offer description

General Description Aston University is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to join the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AiPT), one of the world’s leading research centres in photonics. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting‑edge research within the field of photonic technologies and optical communications.

The role involves conducting advanced research within an EPSRC‑funded project focused on the development and application of the Nonlinear Fourier Transform (NFT) and soliton theory for optical signal processing. The Research Associate will work closely with academic staff and collaborators to develop optical filters and multiplexers for the nonlinear spectrum of optical signals and contribute to advancing optical communication technologies.

The position requires collaboration with experimental researchers to implement innovative technologies such as the Optical Darboux Transformer (ODT) and explore its applications in telecommunications, nonlinear fibre optics, fibre lasers, and optical resonators. The Research Associate will carry out analytical investigations and numerical modelling, deliver project objectives within the project framework, and collaborate with international partners where required.

The successful candidate will also contribute to producing high‑quality research outputs, including academic publications and conference presentations. Additional responsibilities include assisting in the supervision of postgraduate students, maintaining research records and documentation, supporting research proposals, and contributing to the wider research profile of the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies and Aston University.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in Photonics, Theoretical Physics, Optical Engineering, Electronics and Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline by the start date of the appointment. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to undertake independent research and contribute effectively to collaborative research projects.
