Biomedical 3D Design Engineer

Job overview
A proactive team member will join our growing service to deliver 3D surgical planning and printing across Manchester, focusing on cranio‑maxillofacial devices and guides. The role involves designing and manufacturing patient‑specific deep‑buried implants for oncology, trauma and congenital specialties, and supporting surgical teams with planning sessions and theatre attendance.
Main duties of the job
* Design and manufacture patient‑specific treatment plans in collaboration with surgical consultants and other clinicians, meeting specified time frames.
* Manage own 3D planning workloads and prioritise work according to urgency and need.
* Contribute to the maintenance of 3D printers and software license configurations.
* Maintain and ensure specialist 3D printing equipment is calibrated and up‑to‑date.
* Plan surgical procedures using specialist 3D software for highly complex reconstructive surgery, CMF implant planning (zygomatic, restorative, facial prosthetic), patient‑specific implants for oncology, trauma and congenital specialties, and complex anatomical diagnostic modelling.
* Provide specialised support to 3D surgical planning cases during conferences and theatre sessions.
* Contribute to the implementation of the Medical Device Regulation and QMS requirements so the laboratory meets required standards.
* Proactively develop the 3D service/hub further within Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

* Institute of Maxillofacial Prosthetists and Technologists (IMPT)
* Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
Qualifications
* Degree in Biomedical Engineering or equivalent (Beng Hons)
* Masters in Biomedical Engineering or equivalent recognised post‑graduate qualifications
Knowledge and skills
* Specialist experience in 3D surgical planning and use of 3D Virtual Planning Software
* IT, communication, presentation and public speaking skills, including PowerPoint
* Knowledge of Medical Device Regulation and QMS systems
* Experience of Computer‑Aided Design, Rapid Prototyping and 3D printing within a maxillofacial setting
* Ability to travel between hospital sites
* Involvement with the Scientific Training Programme (STP)
* Recent attendance at national conferences or courses within the profession
