Graphic Designer
To create compelling, accessible, and professional visual communications that support CITB's mission to develop skills within the construction industry. This role will deliver high‑quality graphic design solutions across multiple channels whilst ensuring compliance with Government Communication Service (GCS) standards and accessibility requirements to effectively communicate with construction employers, workers and stakeholders.
Location: Peterborough (Hybrid) – team works from home and attends the office one to two days per month as business needs require.
Hours of Work: Full‑time (35 hours per week)
Contract: Permanent
Grade: SC3
Interviews: Anticipated during the first 2 weeks of December – candidates will be asked to provide their portfolio of work.
What You’ll Be Doing:
* Visual Communications Design and Brand Management – Create engaging visual designs for marketing campaigns, internal communications, digital platforms and print materials that align with CITB brand guidelines and HM Government brand standards. Develop a consistent visual identity across all communications channels while supporting the organisation’s role as the Sector Skills Council and Industry Training Board for construction.
* Accessible and Inclusive Design – Ensure all graphic design work meets GCS accessibility standards, applying accessibility principles such as alt text, colour‑blind accessibility and compliance with WCAG.
* Multi‑Channel Content Creation – Design visual content for diverse channels including digital platforms, social media, websites, print materials, exhibitions and multimedia presentations, ensuring consistency of brand standards and clarity of messaging for construction‑industry audiences.
* Campaign Support and Creative Development – Collaborate with marketing and communications teams to develop creative concepts and visual solutions that support campaign objectives, translating complex construction‑industry information and training concepts into clear, engaging visual communications that resonate with target audiences and support behaviour‑change objectives.
* Digital Asset Management and Brand Compliance – Oversee the management of digital asset libraries, ensuring all design materials comply with government brand guidelines and intellectual property requirements. Develop and maintain templates, style guides and visual standards to enable consistent application of brand identity.
* Innovation and Technology Adoption – Stay abreast of design trends, software developments and emerging technologies, including responsible use of AI design tools, and explore new creative approaches that enhance CITB's visual communications while maintaining professional standards and ethical guidelines.
Your Experience:
* A recognised degree, equivalent qualification or experience in Graphic Design or Visual Communications or a related discipline.
* Strong proficiency in industry‑standard design software including the full Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
* Strong understanding of accessibility principles and inclusive design practices.
* Knowledge of brand‑guideline implementation and visual‑identity management.
* Significant experience designing for multiple channels including digital platforms, print and multimedia.
* Understanding of typography, colour theory and visual hierarchy principles.
* Ability to interpret creative briefs and translate complex information into clear visual communications.
* Knowledge of file formats, colour‑management and print production processes.
* Strong attention to detail and ability to work to tight deadlines.
* Understanding of intellectual property and copyright requirements.
* Portfolio demonstrating a range of design skills and creative problem‑solving abilities.
* Previous experience working within the construction industry or related sectors.
* Experience working in public‑sector or government communications environments.
* Knowledge of HM Government brand guidelines and public‑sector design standards.
* Understanding of GCS communications frameworks and government marketing principles.
* Experience with motion graphics, animation or video production.
* Knowledge of web design principles and user experience (UX) considerations.
* Experience with content management systems and digital publishing platforms.
* Knowledge of exhibition and event design.
* Experience working with external suppliers including photographers, illustrators and printers.
* Familiarity with construction‑industry terminology and workforce‑development concepts.
* Knowledge of accessibility legislation and inclusive design standards.
* Experience with brand photography art direction and visual content planning.
Special Conditions / Other Requirements:
* Occasional national travel with overnight stays may be required.
