Overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join the neuro rehab team on the Bradley unit for a 1 year fixed term post. The post is 37.5 hours per week on the Bradley Unit, a 20 bedded Regional 2b Neurorehabilitation Unit based in Woking Hospital, part of Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Delivering excellence in patient care and patient experience is our driving force. The post will support development of clinical skills in a friendly and supportive department. You would have the chance to contribute and facilitate service improvements and innovations within the service. We are committed to personal development through supervision and appraisal, as well as internal and external training. There may be occasions when you will be expected to transfer your skills to support acute stroke/neurological patients/ESD patients or weekend working as the service requires.
Responsibilities
* Alongside an MDT including OT/PT/SLT, be responsible for the management of a complex clinical caseload.
* Provide clinical expertise and support to those on your caseload.
* Support colleagues within the Bradley Unit Neuro rehab team consisting of qualified and non-qualified staff.
* Be responsible for the clinical OT assessment, rehab and management of a complex clinical neuro caseload from admission through to discharge, including liaison and onwards referrals.
* Be involved in developing the service in line with national and local strategic plans.
* Plan effectively the daily management of a caseload of patients by prioritising clinical work, responding to urgent referrals and occasionally unpredictable work patterns.
* Prioritise clinical work and managerial work, and balance other patient-related and professional activities as the department requires.
Clinical / Technical Skills
* Undertake specialist assessments of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations and to assess patients jointly with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
* Use sound clinical reasoning, manual assessment techniques and diagnostic procedures to develop treatment programmes.
* Devise individual Occupational Therapy management and/or treatment plans using a range of treatment/management options, including patient education and group work/classes.
* Formulate accurate prognoses and recommend best course of intervention, developing comprehensive, timely discharge plans, liaising with other teams across the pathway.
Communication / Relationship Skills
* Communicate effectively with all disciplines involved in a patient's care to ensure multidisciplinary working, including discussion of patient care, progress and discharge planning.
* Communicate complex and sensitive information to patients, carers and other staff, including unwelcome news and obtaining consent for treatment.
* Communicate changes in care plans to other Occupational Therapists as necessary.
* Maintain timely and effective communication with the lead Occupational Therapist and senior staff on all professional matters.
* Maintain accurate records in line with Royal College of Occupational Therapy standards and Trust/service standards and policies.
Personal and People Development
* Work as part of the Occupational Therapy team to provide an efficient and effective service.
* Supervise junior Occupational Therapists and assistants where appropriate.
* Evaluate own and others’ practice, and identify development needs.
* Participate in the appraisal scheme as an appraisee and appraiser.
* Participate in supervision of students.
* Deputise for the Team Leader when required.
* Provide training of junior staff, students, or assistants/technicians, other therapists, nursing staff and care workers within the clinical area.
Health, Safety and Security
* Monitor and maintain health, safety and security of self and others.
* Identify and assess potential risks involved in work activities and processes for self and others.
* Ensure completion of relevant risk assessments and associated documentation.
* Take appropriate action, reporting actual or potential problems that may put health, safety and security at risk.
* Be responsible for the safe use of equipment used in carrying out Occupational Therapy duties, adhering to Trust and department policies and procedures.
* Be aware of risks involved as part of delivering clinical care and manage this within own patients caseload.
* Demonstrate a good understanding of clinical governance and clinical risk, actively participating in clinical governance groups.
Quality
* Maintain the high standards of the service by contributing towards individual, team and service objectives.
* Achieve and maintain a high standard of clinical care using evidence-based practice, keeping up to date with clinical developments, analysing current research, discussing and implementing changes in your clinical practice and encouraging throughout the team.
