Job Description

This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with knowledge of high, medium, low and extra-low voltage electrical systems and equipment to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team as a Senior Electrical Engineer. Expertise relating to control systems design and SCADA / telemetry systems would be beneficial.

Working within our Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate you will influence and shape how we deliver our service into the future. As part of our Technical Authority, you will provide technical engineering leadership and support to the whole organisation to meet our objectives of safe, reliable and sustainable assets and meet our commitments to net zero carbon.

You will be part of a team that manages, develops and maintains our electrical engineering standards, including our electrical safety rules, for our electrical systems and equipment, which includes HV and LV power systems and control systems within assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures and monitoring sites.

You will help develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for all employees managing or carrying out work on our electrical systems and equipment.

You will also be required to hold a national incident response role which may be within normal working hours or out of hours.

Responsibilities

* Lead and support the development and maintenance of electrical engineering standards and safety rules.
* Provide technical engineering leadership across the organization to achieve safe, reliable and sustainable asset performance.
* Advise on high and low voltage generation and distribution systems, control systems design, and SCADA/telemetry integration.
* Develop competency and skills guidance for electrical system operators and maintain risk management practices.
* Participate in national incident response when required.


Experience / Skills Required

* A good working knowledge of the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* Advanced knowledge of control systems, including IEC 61508, IEC 62061, BS EN 13489, and telemetry / SCADA systems.
* Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Experience in the development and delivery of safe systems of work, risk assessments and method statements.
* Testing and isolation of high and low voltage electrical systems with proving dead.
* Strong understanding of risk‑based approaches to electrical maintenance, including the application of FMEA, reliability systems and processes.
* Drafting and publishing of electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work management, team working and communication skills.

This is a hybrid role and we will allocate a base location near to your home. Smart tools will be used to stay connected and reduce travel; some travel and overnights may be required. You will have an incident management objective in your development plan, and we will support you to find a role that suits your needs and circumstances. Appropriate training will be given. Role Specific License Requirements

UK Driving licence


Professional Membership Requirements

Must have current membership of a recognised engineering institution and be registered as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council, or provide evidence of working towards registration with a realistic prospect of registration within 12 months.
