We’re on a journey to build a workforce reflective of our Borough.
We are committed to fostering diverse teams where everybody can bring their authentic selves to work and feel that they belong. If you want to work for a Council where everybody is encouraged to meet their full potential and make a difference in our neighbourhoods, we would love to hear from you!
Your role:
This role sits at the heart of Wigan Council’s change journey, bringing our ambitions for Wigan Borough and our Progress with Unity vision to life. As Senior Internal Communications Manager, you will shape and share a compelling organisational story, helping embed our four behaviours and champion mission‑led leadership. You’ll capture and celebrate the six ways of working in action, spotlight best practice and learning as we grow as a learning organisation. You’ll also help strengthen the council’s external reputation by showcasing our achievements through awards, campaigns and recruitment activity.
About you:
We’re looking for an experienced, confident internal communications professional who enjoys working at pace and influencing at a senior level. You’ll have strong storytelling skills, sound judgement and the ability to turn complex information into clear, engaging messages for diverse audiences. Collaborative and adaptable, the successful candidate will need to be comfortable working across services and leaders to support change, culture and engagement. You’ll be curious, insight‑led and inclusive, with the flexibility to support engagement activity across different settings and respond to emerging organisational priorities.
About us:
Wigan Council has been voted ‘Overall Council of the Year’ at the APSE Awards. We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or ‘unbroken’ between the supporting organisations. The Progress with Unity plan is a place‑movement for change for the next decade, bringing a new era for Wigan Borough. It draws on the strengths of our individual organisations, recognising that together we can achieve much more for our communities by delivering on our two‑place missions: create fair opportunities for all children, families, residents and businesses and make our towns and neighbourhoods flourish for those who live and work in them.
Our culture is rooted in Progress with Unity, collaboration and trust, with a strong focus on staff voice, learning and inclusion. We offer flexible working, genuine support for development, and the chance to make a visible impact on culture, engagement and pride across the organisation.
We support flexible working patterns, depending on the service, and offer a blended approach to where we work – home, office or community. Employees also have access to a range of rewards and benefits.
This is a politically restricted role
