The adult cystic fibrosis (CF) service based at University Hospital Southampton provides a high quality service to approximately 350 adults and adolescents (16 and over) with cystic fibrosis across the Wessex region. The clinical nurse specialist team have a vacancy for an experienced nurse who will be a team player in the delivery of the service, facilitating and coordinating practice development and further developing services for this client group.
Location: South coast of England, with direct rail links to London. The region offers the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
As a clinical nurse specialist, you will provide day‑to‑day care for people with cystic fibrosis, delivering specialist nursing advice. You will practice autonomously as a core member of the multidisciplinary team, exhibiting high level clinical skills for inpatient, outpatient and community-based patients. Key tasks include assessment during and on completion of intravenous antibiotics courses, port flushes, lung function testing and blood tests.
Service hours are 0900‑1700 Mon‑Fri, excluding bank holidays. A telephone triage service operates during these core hours and you will be expected to manage it as part of the role.
Requirements include excellent communication, interpersonal and problem‑solving skills, experience in managing complex psychosocial issues, including care for adolescents and end‑of‑life care. A full driver’s licence and access to a car for traveling across the Wessex region are essential.
Extensive experience in acute care and specific CF experience are required; completion of a course in CF care is desirable. Experience in telephone triage is desirable.
Essential Criteria
* Registered nurse on relevant part of the NMC register
* Degree qualification or equivalent 120 credits at Level 6
* Post‑registration qualification within area of speciality or equivalent experience
* Completion of all Band 5 (preceptorship) competencies
* Evidence of supporting and managing a range of learners in practice
* Evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
* Extensive post‑registration experience within specialist area
* Knowledge of current issues within the acute health service
* Understanding of personal accountability
* Confidence in own knowledge base; aware of learning needs and seeks guidance when appropriate
* Able to critically review and communicate clinical information
Desirable Criteria
* Registered on MSC Pathway – completion of HTPA competencies
* Experience as a Practice Assessor or supporting learner progression
* Counselling qualification
* Palliative care course
* IT training
* Change Management, clinical practice development experience
* Multidisciplinary team working experience
* Interest in nurse‑led care
* Organizational/strategic awareness
* Clear understanding of professional accountability and autonomous practice components of role
