Minimum Requirements
To apply for the Port of London Authority Trainee Pilot position, you must:
* Be eligible to work in the UK – Find out more about eligibility
* Hold a STCW II/2 Masters Unlimited Certificate of Competency, or have achieved this by the time training begins (Evidence of Notice of Eligibility required)
* Hold an unrestricted ENG1 medical certificate (or equivalent)
* Hold a full current driving license
* Be an excellent communicator and fluent in English, especially when using VHF
* Have good spatial awareness
* Be decisive and confident in your actions
* Be a team player with good IT skills
* Reside within one hour’s travel to our Gravesend headquarters
Desirable Skills
* Experience in tug operations (berthing & unberthing)
* Experience working aboard various commercial vessels
* Knowledge of the Ports and Marine Facilities Safety Code
* Local knowledge of the river Thames
Training will be provided for the right candidate for these skills.
Key Accountabilities
Some responsibilities of our Pilots include:
* Providing clear navigational advice and regulatory information to vessel masters
* Supporting vessel masters in communication with personnel and other vessels
* Conducting navigation and bridge management duties
* Recording and submitting passage plans
* Coordinating tug activity
* Upholding the reputation of the Port of London Authority through safe operations and excellent customer service
Salary: Marine Pilot Trainee starting salary is £70,471 during a 7-month training period. Salary increases with pilot progression, from Pilot Class IV at £88,712 up to Pilot Class I at £125,360.
Our Interview Process
* Submit application with CV, cover letter, and answers to screening questions
* Successful candidates will be invited for a face-to-face interview and simulator test at our Gravesend headquarters, including 1 hour of competency questions and 1 hour of a ship simulator assessment
* Within two weeks, you will receive an outcome. Successful candidates will get a conditional job offer pending pre-employment checks
