Job Summary

The Area Utility and Sustainability Manager (AUSM) is responsible for driving all aspects of environmental sustainability within a property context, to support implementing effective strategies for energy and utilities management in existing buildings. Identifying potential areas to protect and improve the environment in and around government sites, Sustainability professionals analyse the present and predict future practice in order to limit and reduce the environmental impact of the department's practices. Environmental Sustainability professionals will provide the strategic direction and promote opportunities to achieve departmental sustainability objectives, and those of wider government.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job Description

This position sits within the Regional Delivery Central Technical Team and has responsibility for driving the delivery of the UK Governments energy and climate change agenda including Net Zero targets. This is through collaborative working with Top-Level Budget Holders at both a Regional and Site level to: reduce demand, decarbonisation and expenditure; increase efficiency; shape behaviours; raise awareness, and achieve the UK's energy, water, waste, and carbon reduction targets.

The Team is responsible for building effective and positive relationships with estate users, industry partners and wider DIO. The role will deliver successful outcomes as part of a team ensuring that DIO meet the high standards expected of a government body. This is an exciting role with wide ranging responsibilities with plenty to engage your interest. The Team comprises a small team of forward deployed regional Area Utility and Sustainability Managers who are committed to supporting the departments goals.

Interactions across DIO, Contractors and Customers will be an important aspect of the role utilising communicating and influencing skills to optimise and deliver in our capacity as the MODs trusted adviser and delivery agent in utilities management. DIO Regional Delivery are responsible for effective management across the MOD built estate while supporting our customers throughout an extensive geographical area. We are committed to the provision of appropriate Infrastructure advice, Facilities Maintenance and customer directed Billable Works programmes. We strive to become the regional focus in energy, emissions and sustainability. Due to the dispersed nature of the Team. this post promotes a hybrid working pattern of office based, homeworking and site visits. No one week is the same. This is a fantastic post and brings an excellent opportunity to work with various partners to advise on high profile billable works in a busy and complicated MOD Estate.

Person specification


* Responsible for monitoring and reporting of utilities consumption (gas, electricity, LPG, oil, and water) to sites via a monthly Utilities Dashboard.
* Investigation of data trends and anomalies to ensure data accuracy and identify areas where reductions can be targeted.
* Collaborate with peers across the Regional AUSM Community and wider DIO colleagues to drive consistency via a variety of forums, working groups and engagement events.
* Support and drive wider DIO initiatives including sub-metering, investment planning, establishment management plans, automated meter reading rollout, behavioural change campaigns, and renewable energy opportunities.
* Provide advice and assurance on Top Level Budget Holder utilities working groups.
* Provide and support effective communications to all delivery and support teams within Regional Delivery regarding utilities management.

* UK Driving Licence as need to visit multiple sites sometimes remote and including an overnight stay, not all are accessible by public transport.
