Job Summary
The Apprentice Healthcare Science Practitioner post is a three-year apprenticeship leading to a Healthcare Science Practitioner (Nuclear Medicine) Degree, BSc (Hons).
The post is subject to successful enrolment onto the apprenticeship and meeting the academic requirements for the duration of the course.
The apprenticeship is delivered by the University of West England (UWE) and includes attendance at mandatory tutorials at the university, virtual tutorials, webinars, and e-learning as required by UWE.
The apprentice will undertake practical training while working with a team of practitioners, radiographers, and clinical scientists providing diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine services at the University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust.
The apprentice will gain skills and experience in Nuclear Medicine by observing, assisting, and performing procedures under direct supervision, working in accordance with radiation and safety regulations.
Main duties of the job
Following suitable instruction/training, the apprentice will undertake the following:
* Acquire diagnostic quality images using complex hybrid gamma cameras and computer systems.
* Analyze and process acquired data to produce images, graphs, and data for clinical diagnosis.
* Dispense, assay, and administer prescribed radiopharmaceuticals intravenously, subcutaneously, or orally.
* Manage Nuclear Medicine image and data network transfer, including PACS.
* Perform quality assurance of Nuclear Medicine equipment.
* Conduct non-imaging diagnostic Nuclear Medicine studies.
* Communicate appropriately with patients and relatives.
* Follow departmental procedures for radiation protection of patients, carers, and staff, especially in case of spills or contamination.
* Operate software such as Soliton, EPR, and department source tracking databases.
* Undertake further training and professional development to maintain and enhance skills and knowledge.
* Participate fully in theoretical and practical training.

Entry Requirements
* Right to live and work in the UK.
* Level 2 qualifications: GCSE Grade C or above in English and Mathematics.
* Accepted Level 3 qualifications include:
* A level - minimum of 96 points (CCC), including at least one STEM subject at Grade C or higher.
* BTEC Level 4 Diploma in Healthcare Science with relevant units.
* BTEC National Extended Diploma - grade MMM, including STEM subjects.
* Access to Higher Education Diploma - at least 45 credits at Level 3, with 15 in STEM units.

Qualifications (Essential)
* English, Mathematics, and Double Science qualifications at GCSE Grade C/4 or above.
* A level - 96 points (CCC), including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Mathematics, or BTEC equivalent.
Technical Skills and Competencies (Essential)
* Good communication skills, written and verbal.

* Ability to handle patients and sensitive equipment.
* Computer literate and highly numerate.
Desirable Skills
* Experience within a clinical environment (e.g., x-ray, radiology).

* Good understanding of physics and maths to A-level standard.
Desirable Knowledge
* Basic applications of medical imaging and patient pathway integration.
* Understanding of risks associated with x-ray imaging.
