Head and Neck Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist

We have a fantastic opportunity available for a full time B7 permanent position within a passionate and dedicated Head and Neck Cancer Clinical Nurse specialist team.

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Band 7 nurse to join our team who will be committed to work collaboratively with our Head and Neck Cancer Multi disciplinary Team professionals. The current team are based in Bristol Dental Hospital, delivering high standards of person centered care across University Hospital Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust and the community.


Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide a holistic, patient focused service delivering evidence-based care, information and advice to patients with head & neck cancer, supporting them and their families throughout diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care.

Ideally the post holder would have a significant experience in providing resource in the care of patients with specialist care needs, including the management of Tracheostomy and Laryngectomy care, Complex wounds, and Chemotherapy.

Act as key worker when appropriate and utilise expert clinical knowledge to provide comprehensive specialist advice, information and psychological support to patients with a diagnosis of head & neck cancer.

The post holder will acknowledge and provide the overall responsibility for the provision of specialist nursing advice and support to patients and families, in-patient and out-patient, throughout the care pathway. The post holder will develop, establish and integrate this specialist service and be responsible for the provision of specialist nursing advice and support to patients and families, in-patient and out-patient, throughout the care pathway.

They will work closely within secondary and primary care to ensure a co-ordinated quality service and will be actively involved in education, audit and research.

Person Specification


Knowledge and Experience

* Thorough and up to date knowledge of nursing theory and best practice particularly within speciality area of Head and Neck cancer
* Significant relevant clinical experience in care of patients with Head and Neck cancer
* Substantial current speciality experience
* Experience of undertaking research or audit projects
* Evidence of recent teaching experience
* Experience and knowledge of advanced practice/protocols


Qualifications and Training

* Active NMC Registration
* Degree in nursing or health related subject
* Relevant accredited post registration at level 3
* Qualification in Teaching and Assessing or equivalent experience
* Evidence of masters level academic study or willingness to work towards Masters
* Non- Medical Prescribing

* Highly effective communication skills - verbally and written to staff, patients and relatives including in situations of conflict or distress
* Able to gain credibility with and influence colleagues including influencing clinical changes where appropriate
* Strong organisational skills - prioritising complex situations
* The ability to lead and influence change

* Clinical expert in Head and Neck Cancer and takes accountability for own actions
* Knowledge of national and local speciality head and neck cancer related policies and changes
