NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK, employing around 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community, and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million, with a wider reach of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.
Position Overview
This is a permanent, full‑time post (37 hours per week) with a 24/7 shift pattern after completion of a suitable training period.
Role and Responsibilities
The successful applicant will join a friendly team of Biomedical Scientists and support staff. Key duties include:
* Day‑to‑day processing and validation of results from patient samples: blood, urine, faeces, tissue biopsies, CSF, and other body fluids in specialist and routine laboratory sections in Biochemistry.
* Operating complex equipment and solving technical issues.
* Providing advice to clinicians and other healthcare staff on test appropriateness and time‑scales.
* Managing own workload and supporting the department’s highly specialised areas, including the Scottish Trace Element and Micronutrient Diagnostic and Research Laboratory (STEMDRL).
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must hold:
* A BSc (Hons) degree in Biomedical Science or an equivalent qualification acceptable for HCPC registration.
* Registration with the HCPC (mandatory).
* Formal evidence of specialist knowledge of a range of discipline‑specific procedures.
* Evidence of continuous professional development, such as a specialist portfolio, attendance at specialist courses, and training on new instrumentation.
* Excellent written, verbal, and keyboard/IT skills.
Availability of a specialist portfolio is desirable. Candidates without one may be considered under AFC Annex 21 terms and conditions and will start on a percentage of the Band 6 scale depending on experience.
