Job overview

The successful Clinical Engineering Apprentice will be enrolled onto the Level 6 Apprenticeship Standard – Control and Technical Support Engineer and will undergo a 4-year Engineering Technician Apprenticeship program of work-based learning combined with academic courses (education provider to be finalised).

Work-based learning will include time in all the 9 Clinical Engineering Sections at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (including West Park Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital) and in the Clinical Engineering Quality Management Section. The apprentice will complete an extensive logbook evidencing skills, knowledge and work-based experience. Completion of the logbook will support application to become a member of the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT) and evidence CPD post qualification.

Applicants must hold a minimum GCSE Maths and English Language Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent). A Level 3 qualification in a relevant Engineering subject (e.g., BTEC Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma) or A Levels in Maths and a Science subject are required. Applicants already with a relevant engineering degree will not be considered/shortlisted. This post does not support visa applications. If you are not ordinarily resident in the UK or have not worked in a full-time role in the UK for more than 3 years, you are not eligible for a UK apprenticeship.


Main duties of the job

Observe, learn and assist under supervision in the full range of work in the Clinical Engineering Department. This includes medical device safety for patients and staff, planned preventative/corrective maintenance, inventory management, medical device lifecycle management, acceptance and safety testing, medical device decommissioning, maintenance of records, equipment evaluation, development and audit.

Acquire the academic knowledge and practical skills to complete medical device maintenance work, complete the Clinical Apprentice Logbook, feedback and reflective forms as required, to support CPD evidence and RCT registration.

Ensure all work is carried out as instructed and in strict compliance with agreed instructions, maintaining accurate records of work undertaken.

Assist with quality improvement projects, including applying lean methodology, defining the scope of projects, data collection, implementing required quality changes and checking effectiveness.

Assist in updating training resources for the wider Clinical Engineering team.

Update IQM with completed Health and Safety (H&S) reviews. Help with H&S audits and adherence to Trust policies and local procedures.

Follow department technical procedures and safety standards applicable to medical devices.

Conform to all departmental safe working practices and departmental policies and procedures.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Job Summary: We offer an opportunity for an enthusiastic Clinical Engineering Apprentice to work in the Clinical Engineering section of the Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering Department within the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust. The successful candidate will be enrolled onto the Level 6 Apprenticeship Standard – Control and Technical Support Engineer and will undergo a 4-year Engineering Technician Apprenticeship program of work-based learning combined with academic courses (education provider to be finalised). Depending on the route, this may lead to a future progressive pathway within Clinical Engineering.

Work-based learning will include time in all the 9 Clinical Engineering Sections at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (including West Park Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital) and in the Clinical Engineering Quality Management Section. The apprentice will complete an extensive logbook evidencing skills, knowledge, and work-based experience. Completion of the logbook will support the apprentice’s application to become a member of the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT) and evidence CPD post qualification.

Applicants must hold a minimum GCSE Maths and English Language Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent). A Level 3 qualification in a relevant Engineering subject (e.g., BTEC Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma) or A Levels in Maths and a Science subject are required. All successful candidates will be offered a position conditionally, subject to achieving the required grades and mandatory checks (e.g., Disclosure and Barring Service, references, and Occupational Health).

A provision of the post is that the successful candidate must be prepared to travel to the education provider’s base as required to complete their study and apprenticeship. A provider is being finalised but will be in the West Midlands. The successful candidate will also attend medical device manufacturer and developmental courses which are not always available onsite, and spend time with our community team who work on external sites. A valid driving licence will be beneficial.

Main Duties & Responsibilities: To be managerially and technically responsible to the Professional Technical Development Manager. To be committed to gaining qualifications and skills to become a Clinical Technologist. To observe, learn and assist under supervision in the full range of work in the Clinical Engineering Department, including medical device safety, maintenance, inventory, lifecycle management, testing, decommissioning, records, evaluation and audit. To progress towards acquiring the academic knowledge and practical skills, with reducing supervision, completing the Clinical Apprentice Logbook, to support CPD and RCT registration. To ensure cleaning, calibration, safety checks and maintenance of medical devices and test equipment are carried out as instructed, with accurate records. To follow safety standards and policies, and to report safety matters to a qualified Clinical Technologist. To gain experience across the 9 Clinical Engineering Sections at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and at Walsall Healthcare Trust, including external site placements. To participate in relevant training given by manufacturers and technical staff. To respond quickly and escalate as appropriate to clinical technologists. To conform to MPCE safe working practices and QMS. To establish good working relationships with technical, clinical and support staff. This Job Description is a guide and not exhaustive.
