Job summary

An opportunity to join West Middlesex University Hospital Trauma Orthopaedic department as a Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in Upper Limb Surgery. This is a 10 PA Locum Consultant fixed-term post.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work with existing consultants and staff to ensure high-quality, comprehensive specialist orthopaedic care, leading a team to deliver effective treatment for patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Regular dedicated theatre sessions will be included in the job plan.

The post holder is expected to:

* Participate actively in departmental meetings, including Business, Mortality and Morbidity, and daily trauma meetings.
* Provide a comprehensive outpatient and theatre service for upper limb and primary arthroplasty cases.
* Manage complex upper limb trauma cases beyond the scope of a general trauma surgeon.
* Engage in MDT discussions and uphold peer review standards within the department.

Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will work with existing consultants to ensure high-quality orthopaedic care, leading a team for outpatient and inpatient treatment, including regular theatre sessions and rotation at the Elective Orthopaedic Centre.

Participation in departmental meetings such as Business, Morbidity and Mortality, and trauma meetings is expected.

Key working relationships

The department includes consultants such as Mr Victor Babu, Mr Chris Huber, Mr Arjuna Imbuldeniya, among others, along with middle grade doctors, clinical fellows, and a trauma team.

Each site has a trauma co-ordinator and nurse practitioner. Consultants report to the Divisional Management team via Clinical Service Leads and the General Manager. You will set annual objectives aligned with service needs.

The role involves providing comprehensive upper limb outpatient and theatre services, managing complex trauma cases, and ensuring peer review standards are met within the department.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training (Essential):

* Full GMC Registration
* Entry on GMC Specialist Register or eligibility within 6 months via CCT or CESR
* FRCS(Orth) or equivalent specialist qualification
* Understanding of GMC Good Medical Practice principles

Desirable qualifications include an MD or higher postgraduate training.

Clinical Experience (Essential):

* Broad training including trauma management and fractured neck of femur
* Experience in elective and traumatic hip surgery

Teaching and Training (Essential):

* Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
* Medical or Adult Education training
* Understanding of clinical management roles

Research (Essential):

* Understanding of clinical research principles
* Experience in evidence-based practice changes

Skills and Knowledge (Essential):

* Understanding of Clinical Governance
* IT proficiency (email, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
* Experience leading effective audits
