About St Michael's School
St. Michael's School and sixth form is one of the UK's leading independent schools, consistently highly ranked yet remaining inclusive and committed to our mission of success for all students who join us. We offer an outstanding education, combining the pursuit of academic excellence with all-round personal development, for boys and girls aged 3-18 years.
Background to the post
This exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team as the Curriculum Leader for ESOL. Our school continues to go from strength to strength, with many school years being oversubscribed due to demand for places. There are tremendous benefits to working in the independent schools’ school sector and St. Michael’s is one of Wales’ leading schools. Our summer 2024 A-Level results propelled us to third place in the whole UK (Sunday Times). In 2021 we were named as Welsh Independent Secondary School of the Decade by The Sunday Times. These achievements are down to our hard working staff who go above and beyond in everything that they do and our highly motivated pupils, whose conduct and enthusiasm supports them to achieve great things. Pupils wear their uniform with pride, their behaviour is exemplary and a strong pastoral system ensures that rewards and sanctions create a supportive and optimistic climate which allows learning to take priority.
We are seeking to appoint a well-qualified, experienced, and enthusiastic ESOL teacher who will teach candidates in preparation for Cambridge ESOL qualifications and IELTS, leading a strong and highly successful subject area. The role is available as full time, however there is some flexibility to this based on the successful candidate’s preferences. It is possible that there is another teaching role within the department too, dependent upon candidate availability & timetabling.
You will be a compelling, inspiring and self-motivated teacher with sound organisational and administrative skills. Somebody who thrives on enabling each and every young person to unlock their true potential. You will wholeheartedly support our aims as an independent day and boarding school, where many parents make significant financial sacrifices to fund their children’s education. As well as enabling your subject area to thrive, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to the wider life of the school. If you join us, you will benefit from smaller class sizes with courteous children, funding for professional development, a range of employee benefits and the chance to be part of a friendly and encouraging staff team, in a happy and enjoyable working environment. Vacancies rarely arise in our school as staff often choose to remain with us for the rest of their career, so this is an opportunity not to be missed.
Application method: Apply by submitting a fully completed application and a brief covering letter (no longer than one side of A4 paper) to our eTeach platform at. Registration will be required for this. There is no need to provide a CV. The covering letter should outline in summary, what you could contribute to the life of St. Michael’s School and what you believe excellent learning and teaching looks like in your subject area.
Closing date for applications: Sunday 28th September 2025.
Shortlisted candidates notified by: Week commencing 29th September.
Interviews and lesson observations to be held: Week commencing Monday 6th October.
