Overview

The Security service is a 24-hour onsite, in person service role requiring flexibility, including night and weekend work as operational needs dictate and the Security Supervisor will be expected to meet business needs.

The team is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of operational security at Bangor University to ensure a safe, secure, and supportive environment for students, staff, visitors, and the University estate.

Purpose of the Job

The post-holder will lead the security team on a day-to-day basis, including but not limited to:

1. Managing the daily/weekly/monthly shift pattern, including changes required for major University events, holiday cover and sickness.
2. Ensure all daily events and incidents are accurately recorded on University systems (including ISAAR and DEMS360).
3. Actioning responses to issues raised by operational staff during shifts or incidents.
4. Ensure staff and teams comply with relevant legislation and University policies and procedures as relevant to the Security role.
5. Deputising for the Security & Response Manager as required.
6. Be the on-the-ground Security lead for major University events.
7. Ensuring daily/weekly/monthly checks are carried out and recorded.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Team Management

8. Provide effective leadership and day-to-day supervision of the campus security team, including Team Leaders and Security Officers.
9. In conjunction with the Security Manager, establish, line manage and deploy a casual pool of Security and related staff.
10. Manage staffing resources efficiently, including shift scheduling, leave, and absence cover.
11. Mentor, train, and develop staff to maintain high service standards and compliance with all policies.
12. Promote a strong customer-focused culture and maintain professional working relationships across the university and with external partners.

Operations and Service Delivery

13. Manage the staff team who fulfil day-to-day security operations across the University estate, ensuring patrols, surveillance, and incident response are conducted and recorded efficiently.
14. Supervise the Control Room operations, ensuring logs and systems are accurately maintained.
15. If required, advice and assist with the collection, transport, and secure handling of university valuables or cash.
16. Coordinate emergency response, incident management, and escalation in accordance with the University’s Major Emergency Plan.
17. Co-ordinate the issuing and recording of University keys and access cards.
18. Be responsible for a regular access check of all University spaces and buildings.

Compliance and Standards

19. Ensure compliance with university policies, Health and Safety regulations, environmental legislation, and statutory security requirements.
20. Maintain accurate incident logs and administrative records, ensuring all reports are filed in a clear, auditable format.
21. Implement and monitor Standard Operating Procedures, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.

Training and Development

22. Design and implement a training schedule for all security staff, including emergency procedures, technical systems, and role-based competencies.
23. Plan, co-ordinate and where appropriate, deliver toolbox talks and ‘on the job’ training to ensure skills remain current and effective.

Systems and Equipment

24. Act as the departmental administrator for the ISAAR system and produce summary reports of incidents on a periodic basis.
25. Oversee and ensure proper use and regular maintenance of all security-related equipment, including CCTV, body worn video equipment, radios, vehicles, and access control systems.
26. Be the departmental administrator for SALTO key access requests, including assisting with out of hours requests.
27. Manage procurement, inventory and issue of uniforms, PPE, and operational supplies.
28. Liaise with the University Fleet Manager to ensure Security vehicles and drivers are safe and legal.

Stakeholder Engagement

29. Act as a key liaison with university departments, contractors, police, and emergency services.
30. Act as an advisor to University staff and customers on matters related to personal and event security.
31. Maintain confidentiality and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with university policy.

32. The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.

34. The post holder has a general and legal duty of care in relation to health, safety and wellbeing and must take all reasonable steps to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for themselves and for other members of staff, students and visitors affected by their actions or inactions. The post holder is also required to comply with all applicable health and safety policies, procedures and risk assessments.
35. The post holder must comply with relevant legal and financial policies and procedures and be aware of their responsibilities in terms of the legal requirements of their post.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential

36. 2 AS Levels or 1 A Level or NVQ level 3 in a relevant subject area or equivalent experience in a similar role.
37. Hold or being willing and able to obtain upon commencement, an SIA Door Supervisor licence.
38. IOSH Managing Safely qualification, or willingness to work towards.
39. Team Leader Level 4 qualification, or willingness to work towards.

Desirable

40. SIA Close Protection Certification.
41. NVQ level 4 in a relevant subject area.

Experience/Knowledge

Essential

42. Proven experience managing a security team in a large or complex environment.
43. Understanding of health and safety, risk management, and safe working practices.

Desirable

44. Experience in higher education or similar institutional settings.
45. History of providing training to a team and/or a formal training qualification.

Skills/Abilities

Essential

46. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
47. Strong organisational and problem-solving abilities.
48. Good IT skills, particularly with Microsoft Office.
49. Ability to work independently, use initiative, and lead by example.

Other

Essential

50. The ability to speak Welsh confidently and to perform certain written tasks in Welsh is essential for this post, for example contributing to a bilingual meeting and writing simple emails in Welsh.
51. Flexibility to work unsociable hours as needed.
52. Highly customer focused with a commitment to service excellence.
53. Full UK driving licence in order to drive University vehicles across the whole campus.
