Main duties of the job
The RTSA works within a multidisciplinary team of at least three staff, supporting patients during structured therapeutic sessions. Responsibilities include:
* Planning and facilitating therapeutic activities (e.g., building bird boxes, jigsaw cutting, wood turning, pyrography engraving, greenhouse horticulture, allotment maintenance).
* Providing clear, concise instructions and guidance to patients.
* Recording session notes and maintaining accurate patient records.
* Collaborating with other staff on treatment planning and skill progression.

Person specification
Qualifications and Training
* Good general education with at least 2 CSE, GCSE or O’Levels.
* Relevant trade or skill qualification (NVQ, City & Guilds, BTEC) or recognised craft qualification.
* Adult education qualification – PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector).
* Degree in a relevant area (optional).
Experience
* Experience teaching or coaching practical skills in a workplace setting.
* Experience working with people who challenge each other.
* Experience guiding new activities with a team.
* Experience motivating and engaging people with severe mental illness.
* Experience in a Band 3 NHS patient‑care post (preferred).
Knowledge
* Understanding environmental risk factors for work‑place safety with patients.
* Knowledge of severe mental illness and high‑secure hospital functions.
* Awareness of wider NHS and mental health services.
Personal Qualities
* Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
* Honesty, non‑judgemental and compassionate attitude.
* Team‑working skills and willingness to follow direction.
* Competence in basic IT usage.
* Positive attitude to change and an enquiring approach to skill development.
