Overview
Laboratory Manager - Plant Biology Institute. The Plant Biology Institute, part of the Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT), seeks an experienced Laboratory Manager to lead operational, technical, and compliance functions of a rapidly expanding research laboratory in Plant Sciences. This pivotal role oversees facility management, safety, equipment maintenance, workflow optimization, and resource allocation to support cutting-edge scientific research. The successful candidate will manage a multidisciplinary technical team, implement rigorous quality assurance processes, and serve as the primary liaison between scientific leadership, facilities, procurement, and regulatory stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
* Facility Management: Oversee daily facilities of the laboratories, ensuring efficient workflow and adherence to quality standards; manage laboratory technicians and stores manager, including hiring, training, mentoring, and evaluating team members.
* Safety and Compliance: Implement and enforce laboratory safety procedures, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, such as GM licence requirements, GLP, ISO, and other relevant standards; monitor lab conditions (temperature, humidity, air quality) to meet specifications.
* Equipment Management: Ensure laboratory is properly maintained and organized; oversee maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of equipment; work with external vendors and service providers as needed.
* Operational Support: Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); maintain COSHH forms and risk assessments; troubleshoot technical issues and optimize workflows; manage access and training for equipment use; optimize space and equipment usage for a growing research team.
* Collaboration with Research and Development: Work with scientific leadership to align operations with research objectives; coordinate with central facilities team; contribute to project planning and scheduling; communicate facility access and scheduling improvements.
* Inventory and Supply Chain: Manage inventory of consumables, reagents, and critical supplies; maintain documentation and timely ordering; track hazardous materials storage and disposal.
* Quality Assurance and Compliance: Oversee safety, regulatory, and quality standards (GLP, ISO); implement QC processes; participate in internal/external audits; ensure documentation of processes and sample handling.
Essential Qualifications
* Educational background: minimum BSc in a relevant field (up to PhD).
* Experience: at least 5 years in a laboratory environment, with a minimum of 2 years in a management or supervisory role.
* Strong background in Plant Sciences with familiarity in molecular biology techniques, cell culture, and plant growth; familiarity with lab safety protocols, regulatory requirements, and quality management systems (e.g., GLP, ISO).

* You must have the right to work permanently in the UK with a willingness to travel as necessary
* You will live in, or within easy commuting distance of, Oxford
