There are two posts available: the first is a permanent full time post and the hours of work are 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday 08.45-17.00). The second is a part time permanent post and the hours of work are 29.6 hours per week over Monday to Friday 08.45-17.00, both posts are based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and both post holders will participate in the departments Saturday/Sunday rota and provide service on public holidays as a contractual requirement.
Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated candidates for the full time post of Healthcare Support Worker within the Scottish Microbiology Reference Laboratory (SMiRL) Glasgow. The SMiRL laboratory receives samples from every diagnostic microbiology laboratory in Scotland and provides specialist and reference testing for a range of pathogens. Testing and the clinical advice delivered by members of the Department have a direct input in assisting with patient management. Pathogens include staphylococci, enterococci, streptococci, Clostridioides difficile, Salmonella, Shigella, Legionella, Haemophilus, pneumococci, meningococci, enteric, blood and ecto-parasites. In addition, valuable data is generated for surveillance purposes and during outbreak investigations to assist Public Health.
Duties include preparation of clinical specimens for analysis, including the safe disposal of clinical waste and the registering of patient related information onto the Laboratory Information System or other manual systems. The post holder will be responsible for working within Specimen Reception and dealing with telephone queries from staff from other departments and external agencies. The post holder will provide assistance to Biomedical Scientists for provision of the laboratory service and perform specific laboratory tests as required.
Applicants require 3 Highers at Grade C or above (one of which should include Chemistry or Biology together with Maths) or SVQ3 in relevant science subject or equivalent qualification, or completion of modern apprenticeship in life Vacancy Request Form (VRF) [v3.4 01 April 2025] Page 3 of 9 sciences, or completion of equivalent accredited education / learning. Experience of working in a clinical laboratory is desirable.
