The senior clinical fellow posts include 80% time working in the adult emergency department and 20% paid time to develop a specialist interest of the candidate's choice. The posts are open as OOPT/E for EM HSTs and as stand-alone posts for non-trainees, with options for 100% EM if required. We are also open to SAS and Specialty Doctors.
The posts offer an excellent opportunity for candidates to develop their own specialist interests while working in a busy inner city university hospital, with teaching and research responsibilities, based in the adult emergency department.
Applicants should hold a relevant postgraduate qualification (MRCEM, MRCP, MRCS, FRCA, or equivalent), and be ST4+ or equivalent, having completed at least 3 years in approved SHO posts (Post Foundation Medicine) or equivalent in relevant acute specialties, including at least 1 year in Emergency Medicine.
Main duties of the job
The role involves service provision, including out-of-hours work, and 20% paid time for developing a specialist interest. Interests may include education (SIM/FOAMed), global health, expedition medicine, leadership, advanced airway management, research, ultrasound, resuscitation, toxicology, and paediatrics. We accommodate other interests upon request. Open to trainees and non-trainees. For UK National Training Number holders, these posts are eligible for OOPT or OOPE.

Job responsibilities
Clinical
Manage reception, diagnosis, and emergency treatment of adult ED patients, with supervision and support from senior staff to develop autonomous clinical management skills while ensuring patient safety. No sessions are undertaken in paediatric ED. Liaison with ICU is close; patients referred to specialist units are managed by those teams, with ED staff responsible for emergency care. This shared care is seamless and collaborative.
Managerial
The post holder reports to the Clinical Director, who reports to the Chief Executive and Trust Board.
Clinical Audit and Governance
The post holder must understand clinical governance and risk management, participate in audits, and attend interdisciplinary clinical governance meetings. At least one supervised audit project is expected during the 12 months.
On-Call Commitment
Full shift system with a balanced mix of early, mid, late, and night shifts. Pay will be calculated by HR in line with regulations from August 2017.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
* Registered with GMC (UK)
* Minimum 24 months hospital service as a trainee in Foundation Medicine plus 36 months in relevant acute specialties, including at least 1 in Emergency Medicine
* Advanced Life Support provider
* Experience in British Healthcare critical care (not observational)
* Evidence of specialist interest
Desirable Qualifications
* Previous Anaesthetic experience, ideally with RCoA basic sign-off
* Intermediate EM/MRCP/MRCS (Part 1) or equivalent
* Other memberships, fellowships, diplomas
Knowledge and Experience
* Ability to assess, resuscitate, and stabilize acutely ill patients
* Key member of cardiac arrest team
* Good clinical judgment
* Completion of specialist skills courses (e.g., difficult airways, ATLS, ultrasound)
* Understanding of audit and governance
