The Control Room manages the SP Manweb Distribution networks, responsible for Planned and Fault work and delivering excellent Customer Service.
The Senior Control Engineer role involves shift-based opportunities at SPEN district offices in Birkenhead, within Customer Service, reporting to the Control Room manager.
This role entails controlling and operating the SP Manweb electrical networks during normal, outage, and fault conditions, leading a team to manage safety, system integrity, customer service, and system access, ensuring compliance with our Distribution Licence.
As SPEN transitions to become a DSO, this role offers an exciting opportunity to be part of our future distribution network strategy, ensuring exceptional customer service, network security, and access to flexible energy resources.
Ensure safe and efficient network operation in line with Operational Procedures and Safety Rules.
What you’ll be doing
* Facilitating change within Customer Services Delivery as networks transition to Net Zero.
* Collaborating with partners to utilize flexibility service arrangements.
* Reviewing system performance after major incidents and faults.
* Providing technical advice and support on network matters.
* Managing operational interfaces with NESO, NGET, other DNOs, and large industrial customers.
* Approving and controlling outage and network access requests for 132 & 33 kV networks, minimizing risks.
* Coordinating outage planning with internal and external parties.
* Managing Electricity System restoration procedures and liaising with TSO/Power stations.
* Implementing power system defense mechanisms, including demand reduction during OC6, ESEC, and low frequency events.
* Proactively managing customer service to meet KPIs.
* Participating in business and organizational change to maintain or improve performance and service standards.
* Implementing contingency and emergency plans, escalating incidents as needed.
* Completing statutory reports and paperwork for network incidents.
* Monitoring outage requests to minimize system impact.
* Supporting operational data accuracy for IT systems.
* Driving improvements and new processes.
* Enhancing safety and customer service culture within the team.
* Line managing a small team, overseeing training, development, and performance.

* Knowledge of Energy Networks policies and procedures.

* Interpretation of asset data and post-fault analysis.
* Ability to document new processes for strategic changes.
* Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation.
* Negotiation, communication, influencing, and people management skills.
* Knowledge of transmission/distribution systems and outage planning.
* Effective decision-making skills.
Minimum Criteria
* HNC with relevant experience or Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
* Control Room experience (advantageous).
* Distribution and/or Transmission network knowledge.
* Operational experience at 33 kV and above (advantageous).
* PowerOn/SCADA experience (advantageous).
