JOB DESCRIPTION
POST:
Community Engagement Manager
REPORTS TO: The Secretary and Trustees of Brynaman Lido Ltd
FEE: £10,000
LOCATION: Brynamman, Ammanford
CONTRACT TYPE: Freelance, part-time, averaging 2 days a week from November 2025 to April 2026. Potential for job-share.
DESCRIPTION OF THE ROLE:
We are recruiting a freelance Community Engagement Manager as part of our community engagement programme, which will run alongside the current feasibility work being carried out towards the restoration of the lido. This is a time-limited project, and the role will last approximately 6 months.
Working with the board of directors, you will be involved in the creation and management of a programme of meetings, workshops, presentation and engagement events. Tasks will include organising venues, booking event leaders, arranging refreshments, equipment, marketing and staffing (volunteers) for each event. You will ensure that correct Health & Safety procedures are followed.
The programme will focus on Access, Health & Wellbeing, and Ecology.
Access
From our previous consultation work in the community we know that access, both physical and attitudinal, should be a major consideration for the restoration of the lido and will be put at the forefront of our project.
Once opened the restored lido will be a swimming and water activity destination for people of all ages, with different abilities and needs. We want to go the extra mile to provide a facility that has universal access so that everyone can feel safe and comfortable to experience the joyful and restorative experience of open water.
Health & Wellbeing
Working in collaboration with organisations and people working in Health & Wellbeing, we want to use this opportunity to ensure that the restoration of the lido addresses the needs of our community.
We know that swimming addresses numerous health and wellbeing issues by providing low-impact, full-body exercise that improves cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles, boosts mental well-being and is beneficial for chronic conditions such as arthritis and diabetes.
We want to talk consult with local people and organisations who provide, receive or take part in wellbeing activities to help inform future programmes of activities at the lido and where we can support and partner with local provision.
Ecology
The restoration of the lido will have an impact on its local ecology, in the management of the pool and its facilities and also in the surrounding green environment and how that is sustainably developed as the project progresses.
As part of the engagement process we would like to invite the consultants, contractors and regulatory authorities whose work is involved in the local ecology to take part in educational workshops and talks about their roles and responsibilities on the project.
In particular it would be helpful to increase our engagement with local schools. NRW, Welsh Water and Sustrans all provide educational resources for schools that could be utilised.
We envisage a series of public events to be held at local facilities such as the Black Mountain Centre, Ystradowen Community Centre, GCG Community Centre, Canolfan Maerdy, Hwb y Gors and Brynamman Cinema.
Each event will be based around the above themes using participatory activities that participants can enjoy as part of the process. Each event will also include community consultation: conversations about the future of the lido and sharing of information about our plans. Participants will be able to sign up to the lido newsletter and will be made aware of social media pages and website. There will be a budget for each event to cover fees for event or activity leaders, guests, setting up costs and marketing. Events should be accessible, inclusive and targeted at different groups, all ages and abilities, in the Amman Valley Community.
You will be expected to coordinate each phase of the events programme to ensure it runs smoothly. Our ideal candidate will have at least two years of event planning experience in a community setting and be a confident and excellent communicator.
You will contribute to documentation of the project, culminating in a comprehensive report that can be used to inform future events and planning for Lido Brynaman.
