Specialist Biomedical Scientist – Histopathology

The Histopathology Department at Dorset County Hospital is looking to recruit a well‑motivated, enthusiastic individual to join our friendly team as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist. This permanent, full‑time role reports to the Head Biomedical Scientist / Histopathology Laboratory Manager.
Applicants should be HCPC‑registered, have a background in a diagnostic laboratory, and possess specialist knowledge of histopathology processes. A completed IBMS Specialist Diploma for Cellular Pathology is preferred, but HCPC‑registered candidates without the diploma may be considered for development positions.
Responsibilities
* Lead and collaborate with the histopathology team to deliver routine and urgent histology, non‑gynaecological cytopathology, andrology, and immunohistochemistry samples.
* Work closely with consultant histopathologists, laboratory staff, and service users across the hospital.
* Ensure the satisfactory delivery of the full range of services offered by the department and maintain UKAS ISO 15189 (2022) accreditation standards.
* Participate in state‑of‑the‑art LIMS operations and support the Southern Counties Pathology network.
Qualifications
* HCPC registration.
* BSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.
* Evidence of specialist training in histopathology technical areas.
* Completion of the IBMS Specialist Portfolio for Cellular Pathology.
* At least 3 years post‑registration experience in a histopathology laboratory.
* Evidence of CPD and training in tissue transfer, small dissection, and immunohistochemistry.
* Experience with diagnostic cytology techniques and NHS laboratory environment.
* Knowledge of COSHH, risk assessments, and laboratory SOPs.
Skills & Abilities
* Proficiency in embedding, microtomy, microscopy QC and other histopathology procedures.
* Ability to supervise and train staff to maintain high standards.
* Excellent written and verbal communication with service users and multidisciplinary teams.
* Strong planning, prioritisation, and independent work ethic.
* Awareness of timely support to minimise downtime and resolve technical problems.
