Ofwat, the Water Services Regulation Authority, is a non-ministerial government department responsible for regulating the water sector in England and Wales. We are currently updating our regulator landscape and continuing to deliver strong, independent economic regulation to benefit customers, communities and the environment. The role sits in Birmingham (B5 4UA) with hybrid working.
Senior Data Engineer role in Ofwat’s Data Platform Services Team. Reporting to the Head of Data Platform Services, this role is responsible for the hands-on development of data engineering capabilities that support Ofwat’s regulatory objectives, digital transformation programme, and data strategy.
The postholder will work across both new and legacy data platforms, ensuring reliable data pipelines, integrations, and platform services. They will contribute to the migration of critical data from legacy systems to the new platform and support the development and operation of platform services for analytical, regulatory, and operational needs. The Senior Data Engineer will collaborate with colleagues in the Data Strategy Team, IT and wider business stakeholders, and will mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement of engineering practices.
About You
Below are some of the key essential experience, skills & knowledge required for this post:
* Lead criterion: High proficiency with Microsoft data services, including Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, Synapse/SQL DBs, and Power BI.
* Experience designing, building, and optimising scalable data pipelines and integration solutions, ideally in a regulated or data-driven environment.
* Ability to support and maintain data platforms, ensuring performance, availability and cost-effectiveness across development, test and production.
* Strong understanding of data modelling, metadata management, and governance frameworks and their application in enterprise data platforms.
* Proficient in writing clean, well-documented, testable code using Python, PySpark and MS SQL; familiarity with modern DevOps practices including version control and CI/CD pipelines.
* Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with IT, data strategy, digital and policy colleagues to deliver data services that meet organisational needs.
* Experience in digital and data transformation programmes, ideally involving reusable data services or products.
* Strong commitment to continuous learning and staying informed of emerging data engineering and cloud platform trends.
