Education required: Currently studying an Undergraduate Degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or similar.
Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK or ROI university for the duration of your placement. If you have already graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree and are currently studying a postgraduate Masters, you are not eligible for this programme. Language requirement: Written and spoken fluency in English. Expected Start date: September 2026. Duration: 1 year (approximately). Salary: £25,400 plus a bonus. The Roles (3 available)

Role 1 – Analytical Chemistry – Ware R&D and Stevenage
Overview of the Department: The Analytical Development department performs analytical chemistry activities for the development and control of manufacturing processes for new drug substances and drug products. Data produced is key to the supply of novel medicines to patients.
Key Placement Learnings:
* Experience of key analytical techniques and processes (HPLC, GC, dissolution, MS, NMR, vibrational spectroscopy, Karl-Fisher, automated methods, method validation, stability testing, batch analysis and documentation) in GMP environments.
* Creation, review and validation of analytical methods, laboratory documentation and technical reports.
* Supervision by a GSK analyst and collaboration with other technical experts.
* A personal project or work packages, and test/release of materials for clinical studies.
* SOPs; GMP; RCA and continuous project improvements.
Role 2 – Physicochemical Analysis – Stevenage
Overview of the Department: The Physicochemical Analysis group supports early discovery work by measuring physicochemical properties to guide medicinal chemistry campaigns.
Key Placement Learnings:
* Analytical techniques for solubility, lipophilicity, biomimetic binding, polar surface area, permeability, pKa using HPLC-UV/MS and other methods.
* Automation and liquid handling for sample preparation.
* Data analysis and interpretation using IT systems, in-house tools and predictive models.
* Method development for diverse compounds; maintaining records and safety compliance.
* Collaboration with scientists and supervision by experienced GSK staff; project management and interpersonal skills development.
Role 3 – Synthetic Chemistry – Stevenage
Overview of the Department: Synthetic Chemistry supports the development of new medicines with practical laboratory-based placements.
Key Placement Learnings:
* Carry out a wide range of synthetic chemistry reactions in state-of-the-art laboratories.
* Techniques for isolating and characterising compounds.
* Generating data to support project decisions.
* Supervision by an experienced GSK chemist and collaboration with technical experts.
