Position Description:

Elanco is going through a transformation within its IT Organization to insource several engineering teams to deliver our solutions and data products. As the Director – Software Engineering, you will be responsible for building and leading a brand-new software engineering team that will support the engineering needs of our business units and functions. You and your team will design, develop, and maintain scalable software products and applications that deliver real value to our customers. You will collaborate with product teams across all domains of our business from Commercial through to research and manufacturing understanding their Engineering requirements delivering talented resources insourced and outsourced to meet their product team’s needs. Finally, you will need to establish strong relationships with our chosen Software Engineering Partner(s), who will provide additional resources to augment our capacity, and oversee their work to ensure adherence to our standards and deliver high quality output.
Responsibilities:
Engineering
* Build a Software Engineering organisation from the ground up balancing insourcing and outsourcing strategies to deliver the right engineering resource for our product teams.
* Hire, Build and manage high performing Software Engineering resources helping with coaching, upskilling to build a resource pool of top engineering talent to deploy to Elanco’s largest opportunities.
* Carry out all elements of employee supervision, such as performance management, development coaching, succession management.
* Own and establish the required capabilities, skills, anticipate future needs, continuously develop talent and the organisation
* Serve as part of the Software Engineering and Platform leadership team helping steer direction across all engineering and solution architecture
* Partner with Platform Engineering leadership to help inform roadmap direction to continually increase software engineering efficiency
* Partner with Data Engineering to continually iterate on engineering models to improve cost and quality of engineering delivery
* Work with our chosen Engineering Partner(s) on establishing a data engineering capability at Elanco that can deliver and scale based on demand.
* Engage with Functional Product Managers and Product Owners to identify opportunities for Software engineering and determine whether we will insource or outsource specific workloads.
* Provide technical guidance and mentorship to Software engineers to continually increase skills and competency of our internal team members.
* Own Engineering mapping ensuring we have clear internal resource deployment strategy that supports our business functions whilst building strong engineering competency in Elanco.
* Balance the ‘Fusion Team’ concept taking agency concepts to run the Software Engineering ensuring we have strong talent management, deployment practices and ability to respond to demand at speed.
* Act as a subject matter expert in Software Engineering providing strong technical coaching to team members and ensuring we are building broad engineering skills across Elanco.
* Partner with Principal Software Engineer to build standards to hold and measure both internal and external engineering quality.
* Partner with Snr. Director to clearly articulate to senior leadership the impact of different approaches from insourcing to preferred vendor models.
Basic Qualifications:
* Technical coach or management experience essential
* At least 10+ years in the field of Engineering, some hands on experience essential
* Experience working with/ modern application architecture methodologies (Service Orientated Architecture, API-Centric Design, Twelve-Factor App, FAIR, etc.)
* Experience working with Cloud Native design patterns, with a preference towards Microsoft Azure / Google Cloud
* Experience working within a “DevSecOps” culture, including modern software development practices, covering Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), Test-Driven Development (TDD), etc.
* Examples of “hands-on” software engineering (e.g. Programming, Scripting, Markup Languages), with a preference towards web technologies (e.g. JavaScript, etc.)
* Demonstrated influence and communication skills across all levels of IT and third parties.
* Strong organizational and communications skills with multiple examples of being able to convey complex technical topics, that resulted in a definitive direction.
Preferred Experience:
* Team Leadership within a consultancy organization, managing clients and overseeing project delivery.
* Azure and/or GCP Certifications – particularly with data platforms/services.
* Examples of building a new team and establishing its presence within an organization.
Education Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology.
Other Information: Occasional travel may be required.
