Lead Safety Engineer – Leonardo
Leonardo is looking for a Lead Safety Engineer to join our Design Integrity team in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. This permanent, hybrid role requires deep expertise in safety engineering and experience with aerospace or avionics disciplines.
Responsibilities
* Support Test Engineering to assure appropriate safety governance (internal and external), legal and regulatory obligations are met.
* Collaborate with Systems Engineering and Sector Engineering Safety Managers to ensure project safety requirements are met.
* Define Product Safety and Environmental requirements, including product, contractual, legal and regulatory specifications.
* Participate in planning and execution of appropriate test programmes to address design safety issues.
* Contribute to development of Product Test Strategies for new products and associated Test Solutions; support test strategy and development of Technology Type Tests from a safety perspective.
* Maintain and approve the Product Safety and Environmental Impact Management Plan – Test Engineering.
* Ensure test equipment safety certification and readiness; report compliance status in Declaration of Design and Performance Certificate.
* Support lifecycle readiness reviews including Design Certification Review; provide independent assessment through Product Design Reviews and Software and Firmware gate reviews.
* Provide guidance on Product Safety and Environmental best practices, standards and legislation within Test Engineering.
* Contribute to continuous improvement of test processes and documentation, jigs, fixtures, test facilities.
* Provide independent Safety Management Specialist input across Sectors within the Line of Business.
* Participate in Product Safety Panels as specialist advisor in management and resolution of Product Safety and Product Environmental incidents; keep data accurate and up to date.
* Collaborate with cross‑functional teams; handle diverse test programmes.
* Promote safety culture within the Line of Business.
What You’ll Bring
* Demonstrable experience analysing complex systems from a Product Safety and Product Environmental Impact Management perspective, including assessment of Product Security impacts.
* Experience using safety tools and techniques – Hazard Log Management, Hazard Identification, Functional Failure Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Risk Assessment, ALARP justifications.
* Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
* Knowledge of electronic testing standards and compliance requirements.
* Experience in Integration, Test, Evaluation and Acceptance processes or Verification activities in relation to ARP4754 or equivalent.
* Accepted certification of a software product to RTCA/DO‑178C Level C or firmware product to RTCA/DO‑254 Level C.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills; coaching and development abilities.
* Ability to obtain SC security clearance and work within UKEO and US ITAR TAA restrictions.
* Experience with stakeholders of varying seniority to achieve Product safety certification in a regulated environment.
* Ability to identify and direct improvements to complex technical and business processes.
* Understanding of complex engineering processes and inter‑dependency of components.
* Passion for promoting and improving safety of complex systems.
