Full job description

Role Purpose The Ward Manager will have leadership and managerial responsibility for a clinical team and be accountable for the quality of clinical practice falling within their sphere of responsibility and influence as outlined within this job description and their appraisal objectives. The post holder will have clinical and operational responsibilities and will provide frontline leadership to staff. The post holder will develop a culture of clinical improvement, leading by example and empowering nurses and support workers to improve the care and wellbeing of patients. This means being known and visible to staff, being familiar with the patients and their needs and the challenges faced by the staff team.

The Ward Manager will foster a culture of professional development, team support and excellent standards of care. The post holder will deputise for the Service Manager where required and will work in a manner which ensures that the service meets quality metrics, and encourages and supports innovation The post holder is responsible for ensuring the efficient use of staffing and resources and managing a delegated budget under the leadership of the Hospital Manager. As a clinical leader the Ward Manager will exercise influence over junior staff and with peers and it is essential therefore that they promote a culture of practice excellence which is inclusive, responsive and embracing of change. This involves demonstrating positive role modelling and integrity which will build reputation and make the hospital one where people want to work.

Role Context This is an exciting opportunity to work with a talented and dynamic multidisciplinary team to further develop our specialist service as a Centre of Excellence for Eating Disorders. The role involves the leading a clinical team within the adult eating disorder ward and working within a wider leadership team across the hospital to ensure a seamless and well delivered service. Riverdale Grange is a small provider of specialist treatment for adults and young people. The service was established in 1995 and became one of the first specialist treatment providers in the region.

From its opening Riverdale has provided individualised, recovery focused treatment for people with eating disorders. The provision of the unit has grown over the years with the addition of the Young Persons unit. The hospital currently has 18 beds which are equally divided across the young people and adult units which are commissioned in their entirety by NHS England. As such we work closely with the NHS to provide a responsive and highly specialised package of individualised treatment which is determined by assessed need and based on clinical expertise and best practice guidelines.

At Riverdale we aim to provide the highest possible standards of care in which the needs of the patient come first. We understand and accept that when someone is experiencing an eating disorder, they can feel ambivalent about change. Our approach positively promotes recovery and works with individuals to increase their motivation and confidence in their ability to recover, this is driven by our core objectives: K - Kindness shown at all times. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Main Tasks and Responsibilities To lead and manage the delivery of service in line with organisational objectives and service specification with support from the Clinical Matron/Hospital Manager. To work closely with other managers to deliver the best possible outcomes across the hospital; ensuring that the team within their sphere of responsibility are well supported, their wellbeing and attendance are actively managed, and they have quality supervision as a matter of routine.

To effectively lead the ward staff as a cohesive team who are able to meet the needs of patients in a manner which is person centred and recovery focused. They will ensure all ward staff act in a manner which represents sound professional conduct/boundaries, demonstrating care delivery which is caring and compassionate. To be responsible for the high quality delivery of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patients needs from pre admission to discharge. To ensure that the care package delivered is person centered and designed to deliver the best possible patient outcomes.

To be responsible for ensuring that key performance indicators, commissioning targets and best practice standards are met and their implementation is demonstrable. In conjunction with the Clinical Matron, Hospital Manager and MDT they will ensure that the Care Pathway is appropriate to need and that its delivery is embedded and robust. Ensuring all staff within their team have an annual appraisal and that the objectives/development plan stemming from this effectively supports the development of individuals and reflects service priorities. Ensure that all staff have access to and are attending training which is essential to their role and development and as such ensure that the staff team are fit for purpose.

Support the Clinical Matron/Hospital Manager and the bed management team in ensuring bed occupancy is optimised, providing efficiency through referral and discharge management. To deputise for the Clinical Matron/Hospital Manager as required To communicate effectively with their team in a manner which is inclusive, timely and empowering, ensuring robust systems are in place so that staff feel they have a voice, feel informed and valued. Drive and sustain an effective team ethos, formulate and influence new ways of working within their scope of practice. To actively participate in the recruitment and retention of staff in line with values based safer recruitment practice.

To be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient use of staffing and resources; that there is an effective rota, staffing is monitored, adequate and meets assessed need of individual patients and the service. Advise the service manager of any changes to the structure of the organization/ward staffing, which may be required to enhance service provision, patient treatment or risk profiles. To be accountable for ensuring that clinical incident reporting occurs. Working alongside other leaders and managers you will ensure that reports are coherent, timely, accurate and are reviewed and signed off in a timely manner in accordance with hospital policy.

You will work alongside senior clinical staff and other managers to ensure that lessons learned are disseminated and practice change implemented swiftly and effectively by the ward team. To investigate complaints, identify and apply learning. To be responsible for the management of the delegated ward budget with the support of the Hospital Manager and Finance Manager. This means you must ensure that expenditure is managed and provide action plans to reduce excessive spend.

This will mean understanding and analysing costs that have been incurred. It will require you to understand how costs may be managed in the context of varying clinical demand. To undertake specialist clinical assessments. To be able to make autonomous decisions based on an analysis of complex presenting problems, utilising sound clinical judgements taking into account the risk assessment and management plan.

To provide advice, support, supervision and education to colleagues and be a role model for clinical excellence and high standards of practice to other staff. To liaise professionally with colleagues from other providers and across Provider Collaboratives, actively promoting the services of the hospital through creating and maintaining positive relationships with partners To continue to maintain and further develop professional knowledge and expertise.
