Senior Electrical Engineer – Barnstaple site. This role focuses on the electrical design, development and integration of complex defence systems such as sonar, communications, power distribution and control systems. You will own the technical ownership of electrical designs, ensuring compliance with performance, safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and relevant military standards (MIL‑STD, DEF STAN, etc.). The position offers flexible working arrangements and a base salary of up to £62,000, depending on experience.
Responsibilities
 * Lead the design, analysis and implementation of advanced electrical systems and components for defence applications.
 * Take technical ownership of electrical designs, ensuring compliance with performance, safety and EMC standards.
 * Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate electrical subsystems into complex defence platforms (e.g., ships, weapons systems, communications equipment).
 * Conduct and oversee testing, validation and qualification of electrical systems under military operating conditions.
 * Lead design reviews, provide technical guidance and mentor junior engineers.
 * Produce and approve detailed technical documentation, including schematics, design reports, test plans and certification evidence.
 * Identify and manage technical risks, ensuring robust mitigation strategies throughout the development lifecycle.
 * Provide expert support for diagnosing and resolving electrical system issues in development and in‑service equipment, including upgrades and obsolescence management.
Qualifications
 * Diverse experience in the design and manufacture of complex electrical systems.
 * Methodical approach to problem‑solving and innovative solution development.
 * Technical leadership in electrical design with compliance to MIL‑STD, DEF STAN and other relevant standards.
 * Experience mentoring junior engineers and fostering technical capability.
 * Ability to plan, manage and execute technical assignments to meet time, cost and quality targets.
 * Strong stakeholder engagement, presenting technical solutions and influencing design decisions.
 * Proficiency in electrical CAD tools such as Zuken E3.Series, SolidWorks Electrical, EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, CATIA Electrical, Siemens NX Electrical, RapidHarness or similar (preferably Zuken E3).
