Academic Support Specialist: Math
This position works in-person in Rochester, MN. This role is not eligible for H-1B or Green Card sponsorship.
Duties and Responsibilities
Direct Student Support (90%)
1. Conduct scheduled one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions for students enrolled in a variety of undergraduate mathematics courses, including, but not limited to: College Algebra, Pre-Calculus I & II, Calculus I & II, and Introductory Statistics.
2. Review challenging course material and concepts, utilizing active learning techniques rather than simply providing answers.
3. Help students develop effective study habits and problem-solving strategies tailored to quantitative courses.
4. Maintain a supportive, encouraging, and confidential learning environment for all students.
5. Clearly articulate mathematical concepts and demonstrate proper application of formulas and theories.
Administrative and Professional Duties (10%)
6. Accurately track and report tutoring hours, student attendance, and course coverage according to best practices and UMR procedures.
7. Attend mandatory initial training and periodic professional development meetings and training, including opportunities to acquire knowledge of the unique institutional practices at UMR.
8. Integrate the unique instructional practices at UMR, both in and out of the classroom, in order to better support both students and faculty
9. Maintain open communication with UMR colleagues regarding student needs, resource gaps, and scheduling availability.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
10. Bachelor's degree program (or equivalent professional experience).
11. Demonstrated content mastery in college-level mathematics.
12. Ability to schedule a consistent availability for up to 14 hours per week during the academic term based on student needs.
Preferred Qualifications
13. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mathematics.
14. Previous experience as a peer tutor, teaching assistant, or supplemental instruction (SI) leader in a university or college setting.
15. Familiarity with undergraduate curriculum structures and student support and development philosophies.
16. Exceptional communication skills necessary to explain complex concepts clearly and patiently and understand/address student carriers
17. Proven reliability, punctuality, and professionalism.
18. Ability to schedule availability based on student needs.

The Academic Support Specialist for Mathematics provides essential academic support to undergraduate students at the University of Minnesota Rochester. The tutor’s primary role is to reinforce course concepts, guide students through complex problem-solving strategies, and build student confidence in mathematics within an accessible, on-campus environment. This part-time role (up to 14 hours per week) is crucial to promoting student retention and success in foundational and advanced quantitative courses.

Pay and Benefits
Pay Range: $17.00 - $22.00 per hour, depending on education/qualifications/experience.
