Senior Respiratory and Sleep Physiologist

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Lung Function and Sleep Unit at St George's Hospital for a skilled and enthusiastic senior respiratory physiologist to help expand the service.

As a prestigious teaching hospital closely linked to the University, we play an integral role in the teaching of students.

We are a large but close‑knit and busy team, looking for someone who excels professionally and thrives in our environment. The successful candidate will be experienced, friendly, highly motivated, and able to work independently and as part of a team. A commitment to providing a high‑quality service is essential.

You will play an active role in the education and training of respiratory physiology trainees, physiotherapists, nursing staff, medical students and junior doctors. You will also develop leadership skills by line managing and supporting the development of assistant physiologists and trainee respiratory physiologists. Appropriate support and training will be offered.

A Clinical Physiology BSc or equivalent is required with significant experience as a Band 5 Clinical Physiologist. ARTP Part 1 & 2 are desirable. The appointee should be RCCP/AHCS registered or working towards registration.

Main duties of the job

Perform a full range of lung function investigations in adults, including spirometry, gas transfer, lung volumes via body plethysmography, field exercise testing, IOS, skin prick testing and capillary blood sampling.

Perform a full range of sleep studies: home multi‑channel, polygraphy, CPAP titrations, domiciliary respiratory sleep studies, and limited polysomnography.

Diagnostic sleep testing, analysis and CPAP treatment including titration, troubleshooting, advice and maintenance.

Lead role in the CPAP clinic and in educating staff on these technologies.

Maintain, calibrate and disinfect equipment according to Trust and departmental policy, and ensure data entry onto Trust and department databases.

Supervise and assist in training of student nurses, physiotherapists, medical students, junior respiratory healthcare scientists and physiologists.

Provide flexible working to meet clinical needs, including cross‑site duties.


Clinical Responsibilities

* Perform, analyse and produce reports on a full range of lung function tests without supervision.
* Check quality of results produced by junior staff and interpret data, commenting on abnormal results and distinguishing physiological from mechanical or technical errors.
* Advise patients on CPAP use and lead the CPAP clinic development.
* Maintain technical proficiency with lung function & sleep software and Microsoft Office.
* Support research projects by performing studies, measurements, and providing technical advice.
* Occasionally set‑up in‑patients for respiratory sleep studies and CPAP therapy on wards.


Managerial Responsibilities

* Supervise and train junior staff, including return‑to‑work, review meetings and appraisals.
* Take operational responsibility for junior staff and undertake teaching on courses developed by the department.
* Manage stock control, ordering and ensure calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, quality assurance and infection control of equipment.
* Show initiative in overcoming daily challenges and be proactive in improving and developing the department.


Organisational Responsibilities

* Liaise with reception staff to ensure smooth running of the sleep and pulmonary function clinics.
* Ensure correct and up‑to‑date information is entered into Trust and departmental databases for audit and research.
* Participate in audit studies requested by the Healthcare Scientist Professional Manager and Consultant Clinical Scientist.
* Ensure timely rotation of CPAP equipment through Medical Physics to maintain stock levels.
* Provide a calm, safe and conducive atmosphere where patients feel relaxed during testing.
* Report any incidents or potential hazards immediately.
* Behave professionally, politely, courteously and helpfully with patients, staff and visitors.
* Maintain health and safety, fire, moving and handling and other procedures affecting staff and patient care.


Educational Responsibilities

* Undertake and update the Trust’s statutory training and education programmes.
* Lead personal career development in line with performance appraisals.
* Be willing to undergo further training in line with professional development.


General Responsibilities

* Ensure health, safety and welfare of self and others and comply with Health and Safety Regulations.
* Maintain confidentiality in all circumstances, disclosing information only to authorised persons as per the Data Protection Act.

Person Specification

* Previous work as a Band 5 respiratory and sleep physiologist.
* ARTP Practitioner 1 and 2.
* Experience performing complex lung function tests.
* Commitment to engage in further education.
* BSc in Clinical Physiology or equivalent.
* Experience in specialised sleep testing, including polysomnography.
* Experience in teaching.
