About ControlAI

ControlAI is a non-profit organisation that works with a singular mission to prevent the development of unsafe superintelligence and secure a great future for humanity.

We design policies that target ASI development and precursor technologies, then inform every relevant person in the democratic process and convince them to take a stance on these policies. We relentlessly engage with lawmakers, the executive branch, civil service, media, and civil society across jurisdictions.

We operate like a startup: clear objectives, measurable goals, and real-world results over long-term research.

In the UK, we have briefed over 150 cross-party parliamentarians and No. 10 Downing Street since September 2024, with our superintelligence campaign gaining support from more than 100 lawmakers. Our work in the UK has been covered in media outlets including the Guardian and TIME Magazine.

Role Description

We're hiring someone to help build political momentum in Westminster for addressing the extinction risk from superintelligence. You will be reporting to ControlAI's UK Parliamentary Lead.

The core of this job is briefing parliamentarians in both houses and across parties, helping them understand why superintelligence is a first-order policy issue. A typical day might look like emailing an MP's office in the morning, delivering a briefing in Westminster before lunch, and following up with three offices in the afternoon.

We recommend reading this article to get a sense of whether you'd be a good fit for this role.

Key Responsibilities Include:
* Conducting outreach to parliamentarians: Manage outreach to parliamentarians, schedule briefings, and liaise with parliamentarians' offices to arrange any necessary logistics.
* Policy advocacy: Meet and brief parliamentarians on the state of AI and the risks from superintelligence.
* Refining our communication: Help refine ControlAI's communication to parliamentarians by identifying and incorporating relevant material and translating superintelligence into accessible, understandable content.
* Advocacy materials: Support the team in preparing compelling, informative materials for parliamentarians, including briefing documents, legislative briefings, and other resources that support their engagement with superintelligence.
Signs that you are a good fit:
* High agency and proactivity: You work with a high degree of autonomy, actively looking for ways to improve ongoing workstreams and tasks, and proactively seeking to overcome obstacles rather than waiting for instructions or ideal conditions. You are comfortable with ambiguity, and energised by ownership. You are excited by directions like "present at this Parliamentary committee, figure it out."
* Disciplined advocate: You reliably represent the team's agreed-upon policies and messages. You remain focused on objectives even when interlocutors disagree, and you handle pushback with confidence and skill.
* Skilled communicator: You feel comfortable about engaging in substantive conversations with high-profile policymakers, exchanging pushback respectfully, and maintaining cordiality throughout. You enjoy crafting compelling narratives and making complex ideas digestible, memorable, and understandable.
* Versatility and organisation: You are comfortable performing a range of tasks, from arranging and delivering briefings to policymakers, helping develop policy proposals, to moderating events. You are organised and have effective systems for tracking various ongoing tasks.
* Excellence-driven: You produce high-quality, detail-oriented work while striking the right balance between thoroughness and timeliness.
* Understanding of the UK's parliamentary and legislative system, including Westminster procedures and party politics. This is desirable but not required, and exceptional candidates can learn this quickly on the job.
£60,000 - £80,000 a year Salary commensurate with experience.

Application Process

We are reviewing applications on a rolling basis and will interview strong candidates as they apply. The position will remain open until filled, but we encourage interested candidates to apply as soon as possible to receive priority consideration.

The application process consists of a resume review, one take-home task, one online interview, and one in-person interview. We will communicate details of the interview process to candidates as they proceed, and expect the process to take between 3-5 weeks for most candidates.

Other Details

Location: We are headquartered in London, UK, a 5 minute walk south of London Bridge.

Benefits: We offer pension contributions up to 5%, catered lunches, and 25 days holiday.

Visa: ControlAI can provide visa assistance for exceptional candidates we hire.

We encourage applications from candidates who may not meet every criterion but are passionate about our mission
