Job overview

St. Bartholomew's Hospital is looking to recruit a Healthcare Support Worker (HCA) Band 3 who will work in Cancer Day Unit This post is open to individuals who are both experienced Healthcare Support Workers as well as attracting individuals who are new to care. You will receive support to complete the Band 3 competencies and progress into a Band 3 role within 6 months upon successful completion of all required competencies; until then, you will be placed at a Band 2 salary.

We are looking for compassionate and motivated individuals who are passionate about delivering high-quality, person-centred care in a hospital setting. The role involves undertaking a range of delegated clinical tasks, such as:

· Patient observations (e.g., monitoring vital signs)

· Assisting with personal care and mobility

· Supporting patients’ nutritional and hydration needs

· Undertaking limited range of delegated duties (e.g. taking blood pressure, recording ECG, MRSA screening)

· Simple wound dressings

· Strong teamworking and communication skills are essential to ensure the comfort, wellbeing, and safety of our patients.

· An excellent communicator, they have experience of working in a team, to ensure the comfort, wellbeing and safety of our patients.

As part of the recruitment process for this post, candidates will be required to complete an online literacy and numeracy test and only if they pass this, will they be invited to a formal interview.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be an integral part of the nursing team actively taking part in meeting the needs of patients and of the service in accordance with agreed standards under direct supervision of the registered nurse. The post holder will continue to develop essential competencies though training and practice to ensure safety and quality are the priority.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. NVQ Social Care level 2/3
2. NVQ level 2 numeracy and literacy or equivalent
3. Completion of Care Certificate or equivalent
4. Basic literacy and numeracy skills (English and Math’s GCSEs or equivalent.)
5. Evidence of ongoing personal development

Desirable criteria

6. Level 2 support worker Apprenticeship

Experience

Essential criteria

7. Working experience as HCSW
8. Experience of working in an acute health care environment
9. Venepuncture/ Phlebotomy experience
10. Experience undertaking patient’s observations and vital sign monitoring
11. Experience of dealing with the public

Knowledge

Essential criteria

12. Understands the need for confidentiality
13. Understanding of responsibilities under the health and safety legislation
14. Awareness of health and safety at work. e.g: manual handling skills, infection control measures
15. Ability to collect and exchange factual information and data to the multidisciplinary team and ensure data accuracy.

Skills

Essential criteria

16. Evidence of providing high quality care.
17. To be aware of incident reporting systems and escalation processes.
18. Evidence of effective interpersonal skills.
19. Evidence of good organizational skills
20. Self-motivated to work under minimal direct supervision.
21. Ability to work as part of a team.
22. Ability to work in on own initiative
23. Good communication skills, written and verbal
24. Basic keyboard/ computer skills (e.g.ability to enter patient data onto computer records).
25. Contributes to updating patient records,
26. To always protect and maintain patient confidentiality and follow information governance policies and procedures.

Desirable criteria

27. Able to work flexible hours to support the needs of the service
28. Prepared to undertake further training to develop the necessary competencies and skills.
29. Depending on specific service arrangements, to supervise and train more junior staff.
