Overview
Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist role at ZeroAge. An exciting opportunity to work as an LCNS within an established team. You will work with a dedicated lung cancer MDT and be part of a wider LCNS network in the East Midlands. The LCNS role involves providing advice, social and emotional support and information to patients and their loved ones throughout their pathway, from pre-diagnosis to treatment and palliative care.
The role covers clinics, wards and telephone consultations, Monday to Friday, 9-5. You will receive a one month supernumerary induction and ongoing education, with opportunities to attend a lung cancer conference each year with LCNUK or BTOG, and to engage with a wider network of LCNS colleagues.
We welcome applicants with experience in Respiratory Medicine, Oncology, Palliative Care, Thoracic surgery or community settings.
The LCNS will attend two MDTs each week, acting as the patient advocate and informing the wider MDT of patient and family wishes and any physical or social issues affecting treatment plans. You will also attend Thoracic, Oncology and Respiratory clinics, support patients through the pathway and collaborate with other CNS colleagues.
You will identify delays to treatment, facilitate optimal symptom control and address prehabilitation for patients to optimise tolerance to treatment. You will meet patients on the wards, facilitate their discharge, educate nursing staff and junior doctors, and ensure next steps and tests are requested promptly to support the National Optimal Lung Cancer Pathway (NOLCP). You will also handle the incoming patient phone line, organise admissions for sick patients and coordinate social care or liaise with community colleagues to address symptom control while supporting families.
With over 19,000 staff, NUH plays a central role in health and wellbeing locally, supporting research, education and innovation. We value diversity and aspire to deliver world-class healthcare. We welcome applications from people who identify as Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic, or Disabled, to improve representation at NUH. You will be expected to familiarise yourself with the full job description and person specification attached to this advert.
The new LCNS will need a degree, the ability to prioritise workload and manage a caseload, and the willingness to teach other healthcare professionals about lung cancer both formally and informally. The service covers approximately 27 consultant clinics per week.
Key qualities include excellent communication, empathy, kindness, organisation, autonomy and forward thinking. Previous experience caring for lung cancer patients is essential.
