Job Description:
Main Purpose of Job
This position serves as a GIS Forester at Chesapeake Forest and Pocomoke State Forest and provides technical and professional support in the areas of forest management, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), recreation management, and forest protection. This is a critical and highly skilled position responsible for managing a complex integrated geospatial (GIS) database management system utilized in the development of annual forest work plans to direct ongoing sustainable forest management activities on two State Forests. The position also involves running sophisticated modeling software to verify sustainable harvesting levels in accordance with third-party forestry certification standards. Additionally, the role includes implementing daily field operations such as timber sale preparation, inventory work for developing annual and long-range management plans, maintaining boundary shape files, managing recreational uses, boundary reconciliation and maintenance, and geo-referencing boundary lines to new GIS reference points. This position is essential for achieving the requirements of Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) third-party sustainable forestry certification. It requires specialized knowledge of GIS software (ArcGIS Pro), forest modeling software (Remsoft), operation of GPS and field data recorders, and the ability to integrate this information into the Chesapeake Forest data management system. Responsibilities include querying the database to develop management strategies and producing specialized forest management maps for public review. The role also involves managing and updating the Hunt Club lease database, including tracking lease payments from approximately 250 clubs. The duties are critical for maintaining a sustainable forest land base within the State Forest system, supporting the Department's mission to preserve, protect, restore, and enhance natural resources, and inspiring Marylanders to live harmoniously with nature and protect the Chesapeake Bay.
